Musically, Tourniquet's style is a mix of hardcore, hard rock, technical metal, speed metal, alternative and groove. They are able to blend all of these elements with melody and originality. Tourniquet even incorporates classical music into many of their guitar riffs. One can hear elements of Metallica, Anthrax, Hades, Whiplash, Watchtower and Shadows Fall in their music. The band consists of Ted Kirkpatrick (drums), Luke Easter (vocals) and Steve Andino (bass). For their 11th album, "Where Moth And Rust Destroy", Ted Kirkpatrick wrote all of the music, with Easter contributing lyrics on a few tracks. Kirkpatrick also played all of the rhythm guitar parts. Tourniquet even had Marty Friedman (Megadeth, Cacophony) and Bruce Franklin (Trouble, Supershine) provide all of the killer guitar solos. The album was produced by veteran Bill Metoyer and Kirkpatrick. Most of the songs on "Where Moth And Rust Destroy" can be classified as mini epics, averaging seven minutes in length. They are filled with exciting twists and breaks, containing a lot of variation ranging from fast thrash metal, mid-paced melodic sections to acoustic parts. Even a violin has been added to enhance the atmosphere. The songs are in no terms boring musically or lyrically. The musicianship is tight and the production is crystal clear. Kirkpatrick is an awesome drummer. You haven't heard drumming this technical since Neal Pert or Mike Portnoy. It's hard to believe that Easter does all of the vocals because he can sound like three different people. From soft singing and mid range vocals to hardcore like shouts. You can tell just by looking at the album cover that Where Moth and Rust Destroy is metal and nothing less. Tourniquet delivers an hour of solid metal. It's not death metal or metalcore, but thrash metal, reminiscent of Megadeth or Metallica. The Megadeth comparison is quite accurate, too, since the former guitarist of Megadeth(Marty Friedman) joined Tourniquet as a guest to add his guitar skills. These guys have been around for decades now, so fans that have not already experienced Tourniquet, but enjoy the less scream and growl oriented metal, should be sure to check this out. After dominating Christian metal in the 80's, they reformed in 1999 and self-released albums in 2004, 2006 and then Crime Scene Earth in 2008. The band signed with Retroactive Records in 2009 and agreed to have the label re-release this 2008 classic. However, this new Retroactive Records version has been re-titled, Crime Scene Earth 2.0, as the album has had many parts completely re-recorded as well as being remixed and remastered. CSE 2.0 also features stunning, all-new artwork by extraordinary artist, Rex Zachary (Liberty N? The concept dates to the late eighties and Whitecross, who often invited comparison to Ratt as a result of Scott Wenzel?s gritty Stephen Pearcy-like vocal abilities. Trytan was next in line, highlighting a Rush influenced sound in which vocalist Larry Dean proved a near dead ringer for Geddy Lee. Finally, X-Sinner brought a strong affinity for AC/DC due to the vocal delivery of Dave Robbins closely resembling that of Brian Johnson.
\r
But does it work? There will always be those that insist it makes better sense to listen to the original: Since the talent and experience are both already in place then any attempt at imitation would be ?second rate?, right? While I can understand the logic behind that line of thinking, you are going to end up missing a lot of very good music in the process- keeping in mind that imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
\r
Whitecross, for instance, featured a world class guitarist in Rex Carroll while no one can doubt that songs such as ?Take It To The Limit?, ?Because Of Jesus? and ?Love On The Line? are right up there with the best Ratt had to offer. Trytan offered stunning musicianship on its debut Celestial Messenger in addition to being one of the first Christian metal bands to experiment with a progressive based sound (songs such as ?It?s War?, ?Mr. Electric? and ?Genesis?, likewise, are killer). X-Sinner is the lone hold out and not due to a lack of ability but rather overdone production that drenched its debut Get It in layer after layer of vocal melodies while burying the guitar in the mix.
\r
The trend continued into the nineties with David Benson, whose main calling card was a ?Christian alternative to Ozzy?. True to form, his signature vocal style closely mirrors that of Ozzy Osbourne. The artist has released three albums: Holy Psychotherapy (1994), Purpose Of The Cross (1996) and Premonition Of Doom (1997). I passed on the three back in the day due to not being an Ozzy fan, but there are those who swear by Benson?s abilities and maintain that he nails the Ozzy vocal style to perfection.
\r
The David Benson back catalog, as one might imagine, has been out of print and hard to find for some time (Holy Psychotherapy was recently offered for $150 on eBay). Hence, a re-issue was long overdue, with Intense Millennium stepping to the plate in the spring of 2011 and making Purpose Of The Cross - re-mastered and with new album artwork -available on a limited basis (only 1000 copies printed). Three bonus tracks from the artists 2002 session work with guitarist Mick Rowe (Tempest) are included as well.
\r
What I hear on Purpose Of The Cross is straight on metal with some heavy doom-ish Black Sabbath and early eighties Ozzy influences. Standout tracks include the technical doom of ?Works?, ?Second Coming? and ?Faith?, although I find catchier and more upbeat numbers ?Purpose Of The Cross?, ?Holy Psychotherapy? and ?Revelation Man? equally laudable. Groove driven pieces ?Give In? and ?American Wake Up? are also quite good.
\r
The three bonus tracks, ?Crushing The Dark Cathedral?, ?Dark Star? and ?Dear Aleister?, were supposed to be part of a new Tempest album. That, obviously, fell through, but the Intense Millennium re-issue allows them to see the light of day for the first time. The three, staying true to the albums musical penchant for the swarthy and doom-like, are much better than the bonus track status would indicate.
\r
Musically, there is a lot to like here. However, the key deciding factor - at least as far as this reviewer is concerned ? comes down to not the fact the artist sounds like Ozzy but whether or not the songs are any good. And this is where Purpose Of The Cross succeeds in that at its best its songwriting is top notch and in no way ?second rate? in comparison to the original.
\r
So what is there not to like here? Why does the project rate just 70%?
\r
First, you will find some musical inconsistency in that I hit the skip button a couple times, specifically over ?Shout? and ?We Are One?. The two, in my opinion, are a couple notches below the albums better material and, as a result, I relegate them to filler status (keeping in mind that others might view them different).
\r
Second, I do not own the original so cannot comment on production from that standpoint, but from what I have heard from others is that the re-mastering cleans things up. However, you will still find some slight thinness overall, particularly as it relates to the low end.
\r
Third, is the lack of killer lead guitar playing. Now, whenever Ozzy is mentioned what are the first things that come to mind (other than goofy reality TV programs and having bitten a head off a bat)? All the great guitarists he has worked with over the years: Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Zakk Wylde and others. Potentially this is where the problem lies in that while guitarists Chris Grey, Eddie West and Bryn Wilson are technically sound and put forth a serviceable performance, none exactly fall within the ?guitar hero? category. At this point the following question begs to be asked: How much better would the project be if lead guitar duties had been handled by someone along the lines of Oz Fox (Stryper), Rick Hunter (Soldier) or Dee Harrington (Saint)?
\r
Fourth, lyrics are printed in too small of a font to be read without a magnifying glass.
\r
Track By Track
\r
?Purpose Of The Cross? grooves its distance, highlighting a catchy hook and up-tempo momentum along with a propensity for the instrumental- the song features the albums best stretch of riveting lead guitar. Chorus hits hard as does the lyrical direction:
\r
There was a man 2000 years ago
\r
Who died upon a tree
\r
Mocking Him today, call Him lunatic prophet
\r
Father of all heresies
\r
Not seeing the truth in why He died
\r
To save the souls of you and me
\r
You mock the purpose of the cross
\r
He shed His blood for you
\r
He died upon a lonely tree
\r
To save you from all sin? eternal doom
\r
?Works? slows things to a technical mid-paced romp. Approaching doom-metal territory, the song proves dark and low-key with its grinding rhythm section and tempo changes over the final half including another extended instrumental excursion.
\r
The doom-ish emphasis continues on ?Second Coming?, an unrelenting slug fest that ranks with the albums heaviest. But it is not all driving in that quite the copious melody can be found as well. The lone complaint is that the song fades out prematurely in coming in at just under three minutes. The band remains in real tight form here.
\r
?Shout? falls somewhat flat, at least in comparison to those preceding it. Children of the Day should probably be viewed as the world's first "contemporary Christian music" group--except that it was called Jesus Music back then. It was an album that defined the Jesus movement as well as any other album ever would and it became a national phenomenon. As one historian puts it, "Children of the Day were first--and Love Song was about ten minutes behind." The thought that Christian music could sound like popular "secular" music was a radical innovation that would ultimately launch a revolution in liturgics unparalleled by anything since Reformers introduced congregational singing in the sixteenth century. But Children of the Day did not seem to know (or care) that they were innovators. They don't appear to have studied the works or thought of Ralph Carmichael or others who had tried for years to accomplish what they did in weeks. There was no intention or design. They weren't assembled by any record company or culled from the ranks of a Gospel choir. They were just four kids (almost literally) who had been revived by personal encounters with Jesus and who, like Peter in Acts, could not "keep from speaking of what (they) had seen and heard" (4:20). They could not help but speak of it, and since they were musicians they could not help but sing of it. And--since they were teenagers--they could not help but sing and write songs in the musical idioms most readily available to them, the California sounds that they heard emanating from their transistor radios and 8-track tape players. The music seemed to bubble up from the depths of their souls and just spill out, as though they had very little to do with it themselves. Witnessing such a phenomenon inevitably touched the hearts of the curious and the questing, with profound results. Musically, they and their peers (especially Love Song) provided some of the single most authentic moments in American music of the early '70s. No one else in that post-Woodstock, pre-disco era cared as much about their music or performed it with as much conviction. No one else in the decade that followed the '60s really believed that their songs might--probably would--change the world. Indeed, no one (in Christian or secular music) seems to have thought so since.

They will always be best remembered for one incredible song: "For Those Tears I Died" (first found on The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert compilation lp and sometimes called "Come to the Waters"). An absolute masterpiece, written by a 16-year-old (Marsha Stevens), it expresses adolescent piety better than any other Christian song ever written--and yet does so in language that evokes imagery of baptism and liberation that even theologically mature adults (who may or not care for the sentimental qualities) can appreciate: "Jesus said, Come to the Waters / Stand by my side / I know you are thirsty / You won't be denied / I felt every teardrop / When in darkness you cried / And I strove to remind you / That for those tears I died." by Mark Allan Powell

Excerpts taken from The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music

This 2017 Born Twice Records reissue features a 4 panel digipak with all scans taken from an original vinyl record sleeve, and features the same remastered audio as released on the 2006 Retroactive Records jewel case version (now out of print).

The group took its name from 1 Thessalonians 5:5. A true ensemble, all four members wrote songs and all four sang and played. They were integrally related to the ministry of Costa Mesa's Calvary Chapel ("ground zero" for the Jesus movement). The group even borrowed $900 for Pastor Chuck Smith to record their debut masterpiece at Abbey Sound Ltd in LA. It was engineered by Buck Herring (2nd Chapter of Acts).

Please Note: The original master tapes of this classic release are long gone and nowhere to be found. So Born Twice Records purchased a sealed vinyl copy, ripped them to digital, and then mastered it for the best sounding version of this album anywhere in the world. However, because of the quiet nature of Children of the Day music, it was difficult to cover up the source material limitations 100% without compromising the integrity of the music. He's recorded works span from the early 1980's-present. This is the first time a 'collection' of his 'music' has been in issued in the 'secular' market. For fans of progressive alternative rock in the vein of U2, The 77's, Rolling Stones, Daniel Amos, etc! This is a brilliant collection of some of his best and most beloved tunes!

CUSTOMER REVIEW

Having been familiar with the music offerings of Steve Scott for the last 30 years or more I can say his music is timeless. He continues to amaze with each listen.....from his spoken word songs, instrumental arrangements and off-beat pop sensibilities, he plays by his own unique set of rules. Perhaps this is one reason he isn't better known. Steve Scott should be a household name! For now he remains as musics best kept secret. No, you won't see him touring across the country selling tickets at 80 bucks a piece, though it would be worth that much to see his live stage performance. He is no ordinary artist and can't be categorized, making it somewhat difficult explaining his musical sense. You simply need to hear him to understand the depth of his artistry. Steve's music contains thoughtful lyrics set to mostly new-wave or pop/rock arrangements while at other times incorporating gentle Asian-like sounds with ambient tape loops. Steve reminds me of another talented artist out of the UK....Geoff Mann In One Era, whom also was a member of the band...Twelfth Night M M X. If you can find Steve Scott's earlier albums, you should give them a listen. The constant theme running through this great project was alienation and lack of authentic relationship. Long before the iPhone, tablets and Facebook created shorter distances between those far away and longer distances from those most closest to us, the world still suffered the same plight. We are longing for contact and yet move mountains between us out of fear and pride. Advancements in technology only serves to make the plight more obvious. This would remain a trademark for the band. Authenticity was a rarity in the industry at the time and this band had it in spades. Loneliness and longing juxtaposed against hope and mercy permeate all three projects. There is never a point when the listener feels preached at, but rather the point of view always came across as the band was in it with their audience. Music and culture critic, DW Dunphy put it this way: I always believed Prodigal was always in the frame versus being the commentator outside of the frame. There were never airs about being the sanctified one shouting, ‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎÌ_??You need Jesus,‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_? but a recognition that we‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_̴Ìöve all sinned and come short of the glory of God, especially the forgiven.‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_? Just Like Real Life, the band‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_̴Ìös third and last album is filled with so much great music and original concepts that any description will fail to do it justice. Seventh Angel produced some serious magic on this album, contocting some dark, artistic thrash metal that floored metalheads with the band's ability to wrap a clever melody in a tasty wall of distortion! The album would eventually make the HM Magazine Top 100 Metal Albums of All Time at number 51. And, of course the brilliant cover art was created by famed British fantasy artist, Rodney Matthews. The 2018 Retroactive Records reissues have been digitally remastered by Rob Colwell at Bombworks Sound and with full band approval. CDs are packaged in a jewel case with a 12 page insert featuring amazing band pics, a write up to fans from Ian Arkley, and lyrics. The Vinyl reissue is Orange Vinyl with a full color jacket and insert. After being reissued several times, we can say definitively the album has never looked or sounded better! For fans of Sabbat, Trouble, Vengeance Rising, Believer, Detritus, Deliverance, Metallica, and Exodus.

Tracklist
1 Tormented Forever
2 The Charmer
3 Forbidden Desires
4 I Of The Needle
5 Expletive Deleted
6 Dr. Hatchet
7 Locked Up In Chains
8 Acoustic Interlude
9 Katie
10 Epilogue

prodigal-electric-eye-legends-remastered-new-2-cd-set-2018-retroactive-records-special-pre-order-price
PRODIGAL - ELECTRIC EYE (Legends Remastered) (*NEW-2 CD Set, 2018)

Remastered 2 CD Set, Jewel Case

2018 Retroactive Records

RRCD1451

Full color 12 page booklet with lyrics and band pics, jewel case

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Never one’s to rest on the accomplishments of their epic 1982 self-titled release, Prodigal surpassed ridiculous expectations for their sophomore effort with 1984’s Electric Eye. The album received Best of the Year honors in 1984 by both Contemporary Christian Music magazine and Campus Life Magazine. The content on Electric Eye is beautifully portrayed on the album cover. We have surrounded ourselves with so much to entertain us and consume our time that the difference between reality and artificial are not just blurred but rather the artificial begins to be more “real.” Note how the actual lightning through the window is faded and bland while the same lightning shown on the television set is vibrant and exciting. This is expressed in different ways on the album along with a host of other topics that are both poignant and eternal. “Scene of the Crime” is the first song on the album and starts with a police siren leading into an aggressive guitar and keyboard driven rock sound akin to Foreigner or Kansas. Lead singer Loyd Boldman’s bombastic baritone is both edgy and clean as needed with nods to Michael Been (The Call) for pure power. Humanity’s guilt is laid to bear within relationships and how we often leave others with wounds that never heal. But the murderous actions are not missed by the judge who sees all as this is pointed out. We can try to run from the pain and suffering we leave in our wake, but cannot escape a righteous judge. Boldman’s vocals at the end of the song place him amongst one the best unheralded rock voices in Christian music. You believe his words because you believe his passion and authenticity. It was songs like that that set Electric Eye apart in 1984, and why it was ranked #20 on a 2010 list of Greatest Christian Albums of All Time and #43 on CCM’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. I honestly bought this ONLY to get Les Carlsen's signature because he was one of my influences in the mid to late 80's. I thought the music would stink -- based on the cover tunes I expected some Age of Aquarius elevator music crap. Besides, I don't dig most early 70s rock. Man, was I wrong! There's this really cool mix of Sabbath-like guitar, bass and drums with some tasteful mellotron and Moog sounds added in, really good vocals by Les and a neat mix of songs familiar and not. Even a couple of killer guitar solos, too, which I did not expect. It's definitely an early 70's time piece, but it's put together nicely and I recommend it for any Bloodgood fan who wants to see where Les was a decade rediscovered by the artist on cassette, 1971 saw official release on Girder Music in January of 2019 as a full-length 11-song album (in the digi pak format) after being re-mastered by former Bloodgood guitarist David Zaffiro.

So what does 1971 sound like after the passing of nearly 50 years? If I suggest it sounds raw then I do so as a neutral observation and not critique when factoring how Zaffiro worked obvious wonders on what amounts a recording using early 70’s technology. Thin but vintage and listenable might be the best way to summarize production.

If I suggest the album sounds dated musically, I also do so neutrally when factoring the period in which it was recorded. Actually, any dated aspect to the recording is a plus when pinpointing its musical influences, encompassing but not limited to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, The Doors and many others from the period. No, 1971 might not be as good, albeit those mentioned provide a good point of reference in terms of musical direction in which it takes. When taking a closer look at the list, one potentially concludes the music scene back in the day might have had a bit more substance compared to current climes.

For those wondering, 1971 might not rock heavy as Bloodgood but certainly rocks hard in places in also drawing upon the blues, funk and groove, art rock, classic rock and even progressive rock- a classic 70’s sound in the truest sense! In other words, rather than some current band attempting to evoke the seventies, 1971 is the real deal from a legitimate 70’s band mirroring the musical trends of the time. It is almost the equivalent of opening a musical time capsule in this regard.

So how does Carlsen sound roughly 50 years previous? Close listen to opening cut “Valley Of The Shadows” reveals him sounding quite good, keeping in mind he is yet to fully develop the signature raspy to high end classic tenor style he ultimately perfected with Bloodgood. The point being he exhibits the abilities that would later allow him to become one of the more easily identifiable front men of his era.

Musically, “Valley Of The Shadows” is one of the albums finer, with the Sabbath-like riffs to cover its opening carrying over to its verse sections prior to an abrupt changeover to an angelic chorus to feature choir like vocal harmonies. Do I detect a faint precursor to opening Bloodgood cut “Accept The Lamb”? Speaking of time changes, song could not make more of a left turn over its final minute and a half as it takes a funk based direction as Gospel choirs repeat how the ‘walls of Jericho came tumbling down’.

“Elevator Operator” ensues as an upbeat classic rocker with a heavier edge. Shorter at just two and a half minutes, it features guitar tones to hint of The Who along with a jamming bass line to carry the low end in rabid fashion. Instrumentally, things change towards a darker direction to embody and eerie keyboard solo. You cannot say Carlsen did not surround himself with a group of talented musicians back in the day.

Albums first ballad “Hello There” floats its distance to acoustic guitar and orchestration as the artist bestows the smoother side to his vocal abilities. The haunting medieval flair to realize hints somewhat of ArkAngel, a particular I suggest in the most flattering sense.

A mid-tempo groove direction realizes on “Can You Hear Me”. With another pronounced bass line leading the way, the song encapsulates grooving guitars with a strong does of melody while not backing from the instrumental focus, as found in the extended Hendrix style lead guitar! A spacey keyboard solo closes things out.

Two-part cut “Flesh Failures - Let The riffing leads the way (to drift between the left and right channels) alongside screaming feedback and a rollicking beat. Subsequent to two minutes, however, morphs into a ballad as keyboards take over in presenting with an almost child-like rhythm. Quite the contrast but it works.

“Lay Me Down” starts masterfully as another piano ballad in unveiling a superlative melody of a radio friendly kind (when factoring the period at hand) but for reasons unknown cuts off at just a minute and leaves the listener wanting more. If they had carried it out by another couple of minutes, I would rank with the albums better.

“Bad Credit” was later re-worked and re-rerecorded by Bloodgood under the title “It’s Alright” (off Out Of The Darkness from 1989) and a second time by the artist for his classic recognizable “It’s Alright” melody as an upbeat rocker to accent lightly done guitars and a full keyboard mix. Impetus further picks up for a groove to funk based instrumental section to convert into an acoustic guitar solo.

“Changing Me”, another come to mind at once Bloodgood track (also Out Of The Darkness), ensues but as up-tempo borderline hard rock as opposed to the epic six minute ballad we are most familiar. Outside of similar melody, the two versions are disparate to the point we are almost talking about completely different songs, but give either party credit in that I appreciate the distinctive nuances to both renderings.

“Someday” sets apart as a gradually moving plodder. The distorted bass solo to start gives way to a measured impetus, with the song slow and dreamy advancing ahead in exuding another funk to groove laden feel as guitar hint of the bluesy. Impetus only picks up for the duel instrumental interludes carried by accelerated lead guitar.

Eight and a half minute magnum opus closing cut “Battle Fatigue” is certain to delight progressive aficionados with its joining of moody emotion and pointedly victorious to make a grandiose statement. Verses embody the former, coming across brooding in drifting to tenuous keyboards, and refrain the latter, breaking out in triumphant ‘come all ye faithful, joyful triumphant’ fashion in shored up by Gospel choirs. Exciting instrumental sections abound, including the first carried by distorted feedback drifting between the left and right channels and second home to guitar harmonies that transition to the melody of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. If Angelic Warlord were around in 1971, I would vote this song of the year.

In light more pleasantly surprised. Rather, it proves a musically a solid front to back release in highlighting some very strong material, noting anthems “Valley Of The Shadows” and “Battle Fatigue”, and what would go on to become classic Bloodgood tracks, referencing “Bad Credit” and “Changing Me”. Musicianship is also of high quality, and while yet to completely come into his own, Carlsen sounds fine in exhibiting the potential he would later fulfill with Bloodgood. Of course, some reasonably understandable production issues exist when factoring the period in for a sophomore self-titled release in 1985. Five tracks from the debut would be completely re-recorded from the ground up, with significant differences in arrangement and production now that they were with a major label. Five other newly penned songs were also recorded, one of which was the anthemic “Standing On the Rock” which Heaven’s Metal Magazine editor Doug Van Pelt would go on to claim was, “one of the absolute best Christian rock songs of the era.” Powell's keyboards, which made Skynyrd's sound one of the most distinctive in rock and roll history, help Vision’s sound resonate with power and authority. Marshall’s crystal-clear rock voice (a la Steve Perry or Dennis DeYoung) brings clarity to a powerful message that continues to inspire and move people today. Vision put together all the necessities of a truly great rock band, combining elements of art rock with solid guitar-driven stadium rock. Marshall and company created a unique sound all their own that still sounds good 25+ years after it was first recorded! With prime riff-rockers from start to finish, this album is rock perfection. Steve Holland (Molly Hatchett) is quoted as saying, "Vision - I don't need no stinking Vision. I'm blind as a bat as it is....but this old bat has great hearing! And that's all you need to know with these guys! Wow!” Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, VISION is about an indomitable will; about survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American and stubbornly resolute. Even fewer people knew that the band recorded a third album in 1986 that was never released! Retroactive Records has worked diligently with the band to unearth this classic rock masterpiece and make it widely available for the first time ever! Vision was known for powerful, anthemic classic rock, and that's exactly what Streetfighter is all about! This recording is arguably the bands strongest material, and includes the talents of Lynyrd Skynyrd piano player, Billy Powell! Billy's extraordinary talents help give Vision a very distinctive sound on this previously unreleased rock gem. Personal notes are included in the liner notes from David Brown (former Vice President of Heartland Records) and Barry Lee Harwood (former guitarist/vocalist and writer for The Rossington-Collins Band and Lynrd Skynyrd). For fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Forgeigner, and Boston! Comes in a full color 6 panel digipak. Most identify with Vision for its self-titled sophomore album from 1985, originally a Heartland Records release but later re-issued on Born Twice Records in 2010. Many are not aware of Vision’s 1984 debut, also self-titled but independently released, that due to receiving no distribution or promotion went out of print and turned into a hard to find collectors item. Said album was also re-issued on Born Twice in 2010 but under the new title Mountain In The Sky.

Streetfighter also escaped the attention of the music buying public, with the main reason being that it was never officially released back in the day (the album was recorded in a Florida beach house in 1986). The good news, however, is that Streetfighter was re-mastered and re-issued on Born Twice in the spring of 2011. Three additional tracks recorded by the band before it broke up in 1987 were included as well.

Vision, of course, gained acclaim for featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd members Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Billy Powell (piano). The two were brought on board after Lynyrd Skynyrd went on extended hiatus following the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed three of its members and seriously injured several others. Wilkeson appeared on just Mountain In The Sky while Powell contributed to all three.

In my reviews of Mountain In The Sky and Vision, I describe the group as “a joining of commercial hard rock and classic rock with a heavy seventies and eighties slant.” The same holds true here but - much to my delight - with a more consistent hard rocking edge. The southern influences that made their presence felt on the first two can be found on Streetfigher as well (think 38 Special), although to label Vision southern rock would be a misnomer.

One cannot help but be impressed with the all around heaviness to the Streetfighter material. This is best reflected in up-tempo pieces “Stop The Killing” and “I’m Gonna Live” in addition to “Streetfigher”, “Called To War” and “Mighty One”, perhaps the three heaviest tracks in the group’s repertoire. Those previously referenced southern influences, at the same time, make their mark on the boogie flavored “I’m Free” and bluesy “Rock This Town”. But when Vision tempers the pace they do so in style, and such is the case with the AOR touches of “I Know You” and “Break The Silence” and ballad “Come Home”.

The three bonus tracks maintain the hard rocking mindset, with “Born To Rock” and “Let’s Ride” heading in an upbeat direction and “Your Eyes” taking the smoother and more mid-paced approach.

Consistency would be the best way to define Streetfighter. Yes, with a 13 song album you are going to get your share of quality, but it is good quality in that while some songs are better than others there is nothing I skip over either. It all adds up to a satisfying front to back listening experience, the quintessential Vision album if you will.

One of my favorite aspects to Vision is front man Rocco Marshall. I described him in past reviews as “a terrific vocalist, (bringing) a crystal-clear rock voice that fans of Steve Perry (Journey), Steve Walsh (Kansas), Greg X. Volz (Petra) and Michael Gleason (AD) will be certain to appreciate”. Once more, the same holds true here, although on Streetfighter he adds some complementary heart, guts and soul to his delivery. Perhaps it is the group’s heavier direction but several songs, for instance, find him singing in a lower register (check out “Mighty One” and “Rock This Town”).

Guitar duties continue to be handled by Marshall and holdover Leonard Jones. As with the first two from Vision, you will find bountiful guitar harmonies along with duel lead guitar work that trends towards the blues driven (I do know who handles what solo, when and on which song but it is capably done).

Billy Powell, as one would imagine, cannot help but make an unmistakable imprint on any album he contributes. Yes, he “burns up the ivories” throughout, his distinct piano work standing out best on the albums more rocking material (“Streetfighter” and “Called To War” allow him to shine soloing wise).

Production backs away from much of the polish characterizing the self-titled release and trends towards a rawer sound more akin to Mountain In The Sky. In other words, you will find production in the right amount but not so much as to take away from the group’s trademark edge and bite.

Track By Track

Things get underway to two up-tempo rockers, “Stop The Killing” and “I’m Gonna Live”.

“Stop The Killing” is the heavier of the two with its brazen guitar walls and driving low-end mentality. But it is not all get up in that things taper for a contrastingly even sounding chorus. This one can best be described as quintessential hard rocking Vision.

“I’m Gonna Live” takes a melodic hard rock approach, reflected in the abundant backing vocals upholding its smoothly flowing chorus and pristine keyboards elements. Though guitars are not quite as upfront the bands inherit energy still stands out.

The three that follow brings some AOR elements.

Keyboards play a more pronounced role on “I Know You”, a light and airy piece hinting at the commercial with its relaxed flavorings and penchant for the mid-tempo. Bluesy guitar work helps put things over the top.

“Break The Silence” starts slowly but gradually builds into a full blown rocker. Chorus is upbeat and full of spirit while more polished backing vocals and refined keyboards play a leading role. Soloing again approaches the bluesy.

Heartfelt ballad “Come Home” highlights a precise melody. This one introduces orchestration and occasional rhythm guitar outbursts to create quite the stirring scene. If Streetfighter had been released back in the day I can see this garnering airplay on Christian radio.

A heavier rock direction is taken on the next three.

A forthright guitar emphasis returns on the albums title track. With a groove driven low-end leading the way, “Streetfighter” hits hard with its curtly done chorus but allows for traces of organ and complementary piano to highlight the backdrop.

“Called To War” delivers the forthright tempo. Crunchy guitars characterize this one, joining with more underpinning piano and heavy duty backing vocals to put in place quite the stalwart environs. The bands potential at its best can be found here.

What we have in “Mighty One” is the albums heaviest. The song brings an anthem-like presence as hard rocking guitars and accenting keyboards lead the way. Lead guitar is bluesy while a fitting keyboard solo is allowed.

Some bluesy southern flavorings can be found on the final two.

“I’m Free” delivers an up-tempo boogie rock sound. Powell’s ever present piano shines here, adding to the rollicking environs in which a catchy hook and bouncing rhythm prevails. This one is just plain fun to listen to.

The aptly entitled “Rock This Town” proves a gutsy blues driven rocker. Southern edges Vision at its best, the song delivers biting guitars in abundance and an up-tempo proclivity to pull you in on first listen.

The three bonus tracks fail to disappoint.

“Born To Rock” starts to an ethereal keyboard solo prior to kicking into high gear. The song lives up to its title the rest of the way, driven and steadfast while delivering a thick as it gets low end and dogged chorus.

“Your Eyes” takes a calmer and more tempered approach. This, however, does not mean it is any less heavy in that quite the decisive rhythm guitar makes its presence felt. Melody is pronounced as is a distinguishable bass line.

“Let’s Ride” proves a powerhouse rocker. Heavy duty in capacity, the song highlights a no-nonsense chorus and driving mentality bordering on the tenacious. The fitting drum rolls and fills only enhance the creativity here.

I have always felt that Mountain In The Sky includes some of the best Vision material. The self-titled release had its good moments but the polished production drained the band of some of its natural grit and edge. Streetfighter, on the other hand, succeeds with its consistent songwriting and decision to back off a bit in terms of production. Records. While the debut is a fist-pumping thrash metal extravaganza that deserves a home in every self-respecting metalhead’s collection, If But For One demonstrates epic growth and musical maturity rarely seen from one album to the next. In fact, with 1990’s Perpetual Defiance being such an elite album, one could easily expect IBFO to be a let-down. Instead, IBFO offers a thrashing masterpiece that is progressive, thought-filled, spiritual, and definitively skull-crushing! IBFO is nothing less than a maelstrom of metallic fallout. Tossing aside the by-the-numbers thrash, Detritus catapulted into one of metal's most innovative outfits, ever. The 2019 Retroactive Records Legends Remastered CD reissue features 21 total tracks including 9 bonus tracks from the impossible-to-find pre-IBFO demo, all digitally remastered by Rob Colwell of Bombworks Sound, and packaged in a 12 page booklet with band pics and lyrics in a jewel case to protect it all. The 2019 reissue features the original U.K. released artwork, preferred by the band. Music critic Angelic Warlord, called Assimilation “the most musically consistent effort from the band since its critically acclaimed 1993 work Learn.” Tracks such as “The Circle” and “Save Me From…” will pull you in with their technical prowess, while “Assimilation” and “Between 2 Worlds” give rise to a resounding heaviness. “The Limitless Light” and “Impressions,” on the other hand, bring chorus hooks of a gripping capacity.

Assimilation finds founding member Jimmy P. Brown II in top form with his doom-like and low key David Bowie meets Geoff Tate (Queensryche) lead vocal abilities. As a rhythm guitar, he adorns the full length of the project with his mega-tight riffs and chops-placed right up front in the mix where they belong. Longtime Deliverance bassist Manny Morales makes his presence felt as well in furnishing an abundance of unwavering bass lines. Keyboardist David Gilbreath, of course, adds the industrial element to the band’s sound, his accentuating but not overriding work bringing out the best in the quality material here. Out of Deliverance’s epic catalog of transformational albums, Assimilation is one of the top favorites at Retroactive Records! As we said....resistance is futile. You will be Assimilated! The direction the band takes here is a modern groove metal sound interlaced with some techno loops for cool effect. Surprisingly, the basic Deliverance sound is intact – the clear progression from the last release Camelot In Smithereens, but with a decidedly heavier vibe. Some of the “alternative” feel to the last album can also be heard here, but this is metal and these songs are really heavy. Deliverance fans could not be more pleased by Jimmy’s comeback. The strong lyrical base he has given to so many of his songs are present here and the content reminds this listener of the Learn material. Jimmy continues to use the newer vocal style, with some of those Bowie-like lows, but I think his voice sounds better than ever. Song length is a bit short, but it really makes this disc great to listen to in one sitting because the songs just flow nicely from one to the next. Consistent with the current trend in metal there are no guitar wailing solos here, which may disappoint some older fans. No indie mix here, these songs sound great, and album artwork is extremely cool as well. Unlike some of the Deliverance albums of past where there was always a song or two that was an outlier, like “Horrendous Disc” from Stay Of Execution, or “Map” from River Disturbance and “Beauty And The Beast” from Camelot…, this album is consistently metal from start to finish. Moreover, there is a sense of cohesion from song topic to song, a quality that made the Learn album so enjoyable. Make no mistake, this is fearful but it is not Fearful Symmetry. This is metal, pounding riff for pounding riff, and Deliverance is back in full force. Jimmy and the boys have nothing to be ashamed of here.

Includes their 7-song demo from 1990

Remastered and Reloaded

8 page booklet in a Jewel Case

For Fans of Christian Thrash bands such as Believer, Deliverance, Sacrament as well as Testament, Annihilator, Megadeth and DIO

Ordained Fate is an early 90’s female-fronted Christian thrash band. Amy was co-lead singer of the Christian rock band FIGHTER who sound a lot like Pat Benatar. This album could have easily just be labeled Fighter - Hit Me In the Heart, however labels were known for creating solo projects. Technically this was not even a solo album because it contained Billy Heller on Guitar who was also the guitarist in Fighter and it was part of a multi album deal with the label. The album is a rocker, yep it has a few mellow tunes on it but songs like THE PROMISE really are amazing, not to mention the words are powerful and well written. This has a bit of a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts feel. Maybe it's because of the tough attitude that is demonstrated, and the conviction that comes out.

Fighter was a Melodic AOR Christian Rock band based in IOWA and was led by Amy Wolter who was also the principal songwriter. Many thought Sylentiger to be a perfect combination of Rush meets Fates Warning. Thinking-man’s metal, Sylentiger has enough ideas to fill a recording twice it's length. Here you'll find Trytan’s most complex playing, & Lary Dean really shows us what an all-commanding monster on guitar he really is! Many of his solos are brilliant ascending crescendos of intuitive genius! Dean knows his guitar better than most people know themselves, making his guitar an extension of his soul in a monumental flurry of magnificent notes. Robinson and Dobbs are right behind him, laying down a massive foundation of solidness that will withstand the test of time for Lary Dean’s soaring guitars! The combination of the three make an indisputable pinnacle of masterful talent! Turn your stereo up loud & buckle in as the sea of music that lies within Sylentiger is nothing short of a maelstrom of swirling notes. With both musical and lyrical content escalating into an all out assault on the ears & the mind, fans get to experience the fierceness of this remastered tiger like never before! The 30th Anniversary Edition will be reissued as a Gold Disc Edition CD, remastered by Rob Colwell of Bombworks Sound.

All 11 Tracks

Tracklist
1 Take Cover 5:48
2 Deadly Masquerade 4:40
3 Beyond The Night 6:43
4 Star Bound 5:23
5 Make Your Move 5:25
6 Sylentiger 4:23
7 Here To Stay 6:46
8 Playing With Fire 6:40
9 Life Goes On 4:30
10 Waking The Giant 4:01
11 By My Spirit 3:30

HEAVEN'S METAL REVIEW
by Keven Crothers (digital review only)

After years of lying in obscurity Trytan’s second album Sylentiger finally has received a proper remaster and reissue. This album was released in 1990 on R.E.X. Records, however it arrived two years too late to capitalize on the wave that their debut album Celestial Messenger created.

Initially Trytan fell into the category of “they sound like so and so, or such and such band.” Much like Whitecross or Barren Cross, Trytan had to overcome not just being labeled a “clone” of an immense secular artist. (Granted, at the time the artist they were compared with, Rush, was flirting with rock geriatrics, Presto, seriously.) Trytan were a proggy metal band with a vocalist guitar player (Lary Dean) who plays like jazz rock fusion player Alan Holdsworth and yet sounds quite similar to Geddy Lee.

Ok who am I kidding; Lary sounded a whole lot like Geddy, period. Admittedly this was the draw for me back then, I am an admitted Rush fanatic. Yet when this album was released this style of metal was on the outs in favor of the melodic metal sounds of Los Angeles or blues based rockers from elsewhere. Honestly I ate this up but the music did have distinctly different vibe from the first album.

The songs on Sylentiger are a bit more straightforward, while there is some musical exploration the vibe is distinctly more head-on. As memory serves Lary had said that people “complained we sound too much like Rush” and after this album came out the complaint was that they “don’t sound the same as the first album.” Go figure.

For this reviewer, Sylentiger is definitely a more metal album than Celestial Messenger but plenty of textures, rhythmic structures and depth of sound exist here to satisfy even the most discriminating music aficionado. The key to any album are the songs themselves and Sylentiger has them in spades!!

Whether it’s the highly infectious “Deadly Masquerade” with its swirly melody amidst several tempo and time changes, its ear candy of the first order. The title cut itself opens with a bustling keyboard intro that would shake the house with its atmospheric gymnastics as it bows to the driving guitars, bass (provided by Steve Robinson) and drums (delivered by Jim Dobbs). The key here is the melody which demands an immediate replay after.

“Here to Stay” and “Playing With Fire” clocking in at over 6 minutes each have such energy and memorable melodies it’s a wonder that this album had languished in obscurity for so long. Both tracks build up to such hooks that their length is not even an issue. Delivering such musical enjoyment is simply not an every day event. Each musical offering highlights the jazz fusion playing of Lary Dean and are a delight to the ears.

With creamy textures and swirling ambience “Life Goes On” and “Waking the Giant” provide a more concise avenue of whimsy that deliver on the desire of solid songwriting. “Waking the Giant” is such a great track it produces wonderful bits of air drumming on my part (hopefully not while I’m driving). The double time of the guitar over the drums gets me every time.

The strong accolades aside, there are a few tracks which still don’t quite measure up, album opener “Take Cover” or track three “Beyond the Night” feel slightly anticlimactic. And the inclusion of Leslie Philips “By My Spirit,” while a good song, has always felt a little out of place to me.

Those mild criticisms aside, the remaster brings so much more life to this recording. Of course the bass is more defined, but I hear drum parts I don’t remember hearing before. With an urgency and energy, not to mention clarity, the remastering of Rob Colwell helps to define this lost gem of classic prog metal.

If you are willing to go deeper than the initial “they sound like Rush” you will find a creative work of the highest order. Trytan’s Sylentiger has not tarnished with age if anything it has resurfaced to take its place amongst the classics of Christian Metal, period. Retroactive is issuing this on vinyl (first time ever!!) and a Gold Disc Edition CD. I will be grabbing the CD myself.
