They were sometimes compared to Ides Of March, Little River Band, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, the Doobie Brothers and Hall & Oats, but were much better than any of those groups! This was due in large part to Duncan's expressive and soulful voice, one of the finest in rock and roll. Originally released in 1978 on the pioneering Light Records label, Breakin The Ice was produced by Bob Wilson of the progressive jazz-funk band, Seawind. The album was rightly described by Bruce Brown (CCM Magazine) as one of the most legitimate R&B albums ever released. Such high praise for early Christian rock was unheard of and this was an artistic triumph that was fully embraced by the Christian community as the band toured internationally for the next decade! This Limited Edition reissue comes packaged in a full color digipak with enhanced original artwork and is properly remastered for a high quality audio experience! Over 30 years later, these songs remain examples of Christian music at its best! Play it loud! Features the legendary talents of Bob Wilson (Seawind) and the Seawind Horns. After dominating Christian metal in the 80's, they reformed in 1999 and self-released albums in 2004, 2006 and then Crime Scene Earth in 2008. The band signed with Retroactive Records in 2009 and agreed to have the label re-release this 2008 classic. However, this new Retroactive Records version has been re-titled, Crime Scene Earth 2.0, as the album has had many parts completely re-recorded as well as being remixed and remastered. CSE 2.0 also features stunning, all-new artwork by extraordinary artist, Rex Zachary (Liberty N? Before you conjure up images of Stryper, you'd do well to give this one a chance. Where a band like Barren Cross drew its influences from Dio and Iron Maiden, Haven's sound owes more to a certain Seattle sound (no, not that one). I'm talking about bands like Queensryche, Fifth Angel, and Metal Church.

Age of Darkness is a very impressive traditional/power metal album, full of great melodies, shredding guitars, and a Geoff Tate-inspired vocal style. There are a couple instances of Dokken-style balladeering, but for the most part this is a fast paced power metal album that should please fans of Apocrypha, Powersurge, Crimson Glory, and any of the bands mentioned earlier. Haven is a Christian band, but they're not overly "churchy" with their lyrics, so Age of Darkness shouldn't alienate the average metal fan. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, the band worked to support the prison ministry that is now known as Follow Up Ministries, Inc. Gideon's Army worked closely with juvenile halls, the CA Youth Authority, and CA State and Federal prisons. Their sound started out as acoustic, laid back gospel similar to the Maranatha! bands out of L.A. Before long, the band would morph into a full-fledged aggressive Christian rock act. The change was better suited for their outreach which included street ministry (Jews for Jesus, S.O.S. San Francisco), Christian coffee houses, and concert ministry (Great America, Oakland Civic Auditorium, H.P. Pavillian San Jose) among many other ministry opportunities. It wasn?t until 1982 the band recorded and independently released ?Rock n? Roll For Your Soul.? The debut record reflected what was happening in the S.F.B.A. music scene at the time - dual lead guitars, horns and an R&B feeling. The 1986 release of the now iconic ?Warriors of Love? brought big changes both in personnel and sound. Gone were the horns, dual guitar leads and most notably there was a more aggressive rock format. The new sound stood shoulder to shoulder with bands like Van Halen, Night Ranger, Petra, and .38 Special. The album sold like crazy at shows, but with no formal distribution many people never got their hands on the now high dollar collectible vinyl of this legendary classic rock release. Retroactive Records has remastered this essential 1982 AOR album, and it is now available in digital format for the first time ever. The 2015 reissue is a four panel full color digipak, and is part of the Retroactive Records Legends Remastered Series.

Track Listings

1. Can You Still Turn Away?

ANGELIC WARLORD REVIEW

San Francisco Bay Area based Gideon?s Army has always been about ministry. One need look no further than the groups early seventies Contemporary Christian Music scene beginnings, where it got its start playing acoustic based Gospel rock (sort of like the Maranatha! bands of the period from Los Angeles) in working closely with juvenile halls, the California Youth Authority and California State and Federal Prisons. Later morphing into a plugged in Christian rock act, Gideon?s Army expanded upon its outreach by also including street ministry (Jews for Jesus and S.O.S. San Francisco) along with Christian coffee houses and an ongoing concert ministry with performances at Great America, Oakland Civic Auditorium and H.P. Pavilion San Jose.

It was not until 1982 that Gideon?s Army released its full-length debut Rock N? Roll For Your Soul, which potentially got lost in the shuffle of much heavier contemporaries such as Resurrection Band, Petra, Jerusalem, Daniel Band, Servant and Barnabas among others. It also did not help that Rock N? Roll For Your Soul suffered from the same low distribution and lack of promotion often inherit to independent releases of the time, noting how the Vision self-titled debut from 1984 also fell beneath the radar for the same reasons. Nevertheless, after having been out of print and next to impossible to find for decades, Rock N? Roll For Your Soul has been given a second chance at life after having been re-mastered and re-issued by Retroactive Records in the fall of 2015.

Musically, early eighties Gideon?s Army took a strong rhythm and blues slant in featuring a jazzy horn section and duel guitar attack of founding members Dave Angels and Mike Banke. But labeling Gideon?s Army as just rhythm & blues would also be inaccurate and potentially misleading in that Rock N? Roll For Your Soul also reflects nuances of classic rock, AOR, hard rock, Southern rock and even some progressive aspects, particularly in light of how half the albums 8 tracks extend into 6 to 7 minute range. When placed alongside follow up efforts Warriors Of Love (1986) and Grace (1990), both of which took a melodic rock to AOR heading, Rock N? Roll For Your Soul proves the most experimental and multi-dimensional of the three Gideon?s Army recordings.

Take six-minute opening cut ?Light?, for instance, a slow and moody six and a half minutes carried by copious (and very flattering) Hammond B3, a marked bass presence and light rhythm guitar underpinnings. Where the song shines is during its instrumental moments, including the fusion to feedback driven first minute and instrumental break at the halfway point in which organ and lead guitar contest.

Gideon?s Army reflects its rhythm & blues sentiments on the two that follow. ?Dreams? jumps out of the gate at once, a frolicking and mirthful happy go lucky piece carried by a spicy horn section and Second Coming based lyrical themes. Searing lead guitar aligns with the blithe scene. ?Lift Your Heart? takes a more mid-paced approach, calmly maneuvering its first minute to guitar feedback only to gain impetus as the group?s signature horn section returns over a layer of funk-flavored bass. ?The Lift your heart unto the Lord? vocal harmonies help make a worshipful statement.

?What Is Love? represents this reviewer?s choice track from its reserved progressive mentality. Albums longest at seven minutes, the song proves another deliberate and melancholic plodder in similar fashion as ?Light?, exuding a forthright keyboard mix and even textures of rhythm guitars. What sets ?What Is Love? apart is the extended instrumental section that features tightly woven guitar harmonies of an emotional Southern nature.

Halfway through the album and one cannot help but embrace the Gideon?s Army co-lead vocal approach, with front men Dave Angels and drummer Jerry Anderson bringing a similar classic tenor and melodic tinctured vocal style. Besides, you know you are dealing with a group that arose out of the seventies when you have a drummer that is also a lead vocalist!

Melodic hard rocker ?Better Days? ranks with the albums heaviest. The keyboards at the start of the song would not sound out of place on the first couple Boston albums, while the distinct guitars that ensue deliver ample doses of edge and bite in aligning with layered vocal melodies of a copious nature. Helping to take ?Better Days? past the six-minute mark is an extended jam-fusion instrumental section in which the group highlights its abundant musicianship.

Three and a half minute ?On The Move? is the most guitar driven of the rhythm & blues numbers. Aligning a rollicking horn section with sharp rhythm guitars, the song gives rise to high-energy groove in abundance within a concise up-tempo package. The cool Southern flavorings return for the instrumental moments. Whereas my favorite Rock N? Roll For Your Soul moments are its most progressive, the rhythm & blues cuts are laudable all the same- I rate them a slight notch below in above average to good territory (fans of early Sweet Comfort Band should feel right at home, though).

?New Man?, last of the six-minute tracks, also stands out with a reserved and moderate disposition. The song sets a steadfast tempo, aligning another horn section with soothing tinctures of organ and a big as it gets bass line. More melodic vocal harmonies help tie everything together. My favorite part is the saxophone solo that carries things instrumentally (sort of like ?The Return? off Rez Band?s Awaiting Your Reply from 1978).

Ending the album is ?Can You Still Turn Away??, a relaxed and laid-back five minutes in which Hammond B3 (the work of keyboardist Doug Naruo deserves note) plays a heightened role along with plenty of distinct saxophone throughout. Some very complementary bluesy tinctures rise to the surface in the process. Yes, a good way to close things out, but I also cannot help but feel a better balanced track listing might have resulted if another heavier rocking and up-tempo track had been included instead.

As one might imagine for an independent early eighties release, production sounds a bit dated but not to a fault when factoring the Retroactive re-mastering. Roll For Your Soul adds up to a very fine Christian rock album for its era. I believe that ?rock? is the best description of what is going on here musically in that Gideon?s Army does not have the guitar driven oomph to fall within hard rock territory but also features enough backbone to set itself apart from much of the CCM of the time. Musical variations also play a key role in that how many of the Gideon?s Army contemporaries mixed aspects of classic and Southern rock, AOR, rhythm & blues and progressive rock and make it work in such a concise package?

Ultimately, I feel a great deal of the Rock N? Roll For Your Soul success attributes to its independent release, which allowed Gideon?s Army to exercise that much more creative freedom in light of how different the album might have turned out if released on a CCM label. By going independent the group did not have to worry about some slick label executive hovering over its shoulders and suggesting ?Guys in order to make this work, I am going to need you to stick to a three and a half minute verse-chorus-verse format for me, OK?. Hence, the musical experimentation and songs extended past six minutes that you did not often see from early eighties Christian groups. There was Resurrection Band in Chicago, Bill Mason Band and Ishmael United in the UK, and Andy McCarroll & Moral Support in Ireland. When Hear The Light came out in 1980, it was truly unique punk-esque with a Christian identity. Barnabas, in their early formation, had guitarist Monte Cooley, who could write fast numbers with infectious distortion like no other. What placed Barnabas on top of the rock pile were Nancy Jo Mann?s soaring vocals, backed by a beefy and intricate rhythm section. Songs such as Savior, Directory Assistance, B.C., and Playin? For Him are reckless and melodic, trademarks of the first album. Hear the Light started it all for a band that would go on to have an immeasurable impact on Christian rock and metal. On top of the music soared the vocals of a chain-chompin' banshee lead singer who was all about putting her boot up the dark one's back side. The overriding question for Feel the Fire was obvious. Considering the artistic and commercial success of 1983's Approaching Light Speed, could the band capture lightning in a bottle twice? Barnabas was an amazing band, both because they were the heaviest Christian band of their era, and also one of the most creative lyrically and musically. They were as musically adventurous as Rush, but they would also put the hammer down and at any moment to grind out some extremely heavy metal - which they were doing a couple of years before the likes of Barren Cross, Philadelphia, Saint, Messiah Prophet, and Stryper appeared. And, while the band proved even more progressive in their metal for this release, the trademark foundations remained intact - smokin' guitars and top-notch instrumentation. With Feel the Fire, the band expanded the boundaries of Christian metal. Not satisfied with creating art by numbers or being a cookie-cutter band, it would be many years before anyone in Christian metal circles would touch the depth and creativity of Barnabas. With Feel the Fire, fans were treated to a mesmerizing magic slab of metal. One that couldn't be ignored or shaken. One that was impossibly irresistible and memorable. Indeed, Barnabas was unique in the truest sense.

TRACKLIST

Prelude 2:20

The Dream 2:32

Breathless Wonderment (The Dream Becomes Reality) 6:48

Hearts 7:02

Feel The Fire 5:22

Northern Lights 3:45

Follow You Up 5:09

Suite For The Souls Of Our Enemies (Part I - Hammer & Sickle) 5:03

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2606/9196/files/Barnabas_FeelTheFire_2000x2000_470x_fafa0d0b-c1cc-4bcf-95c4-ee12a0d75bbe.jpg?v=1758808901
2nd-chapter-of-acts-singer-sower-vinyl
2nd Chapter of Acts - Singer Sower (Vinyl)

Price just reduced.

70's / 80's Jesus Music

1991 Sparrow Records

For fans of: Queen, Randy Stonehill, Steve Camp, Margaret Becker, DeGarmo & Key

2nd Chapter of Acts was a Jesus music and early contemporary Christian music group composed of sistersAnnie Herring and Nelly Greisen and brother Matthew Ward. The content on Electric Eye is beautifully portrayed on the album cover. We have surrounded ourselves with so much to entertain us and consume our time that the difference between reality and artificial are not just blurred but rather the artificial begins to be more “real.” Note how the actual lightning through the window is faded and bland while the same lightning shown on the television set is vibrant and exciting. This is expressed in different ways on the album along with a host of other topics that are both poignant and eternal. “Scene of the Crime” is the first song on the album and starts with a police siren leading into an aggressive guitar and keyboard driven rock sound akin to Foreigner or Kansas. Lead singer Loyd Boldman’s bombastic baritone is both edgy and clean as needed with nods to Michael Been (The Call) for pure power. Humanity’s guilt is laid to bear within relationships and how we often leave others with wounds that never heal. But the murderous actions are not missed by the judge who sees all as this is pointed out. We can try to run from the pain and suffering we leave in our wake, but cannot escape a righteous judge. Boldman’s vocals at the end of the song place him amongst one the best unheralded rock voices in Christian music. You believe his words because you believe his passion and authenticity. It was songs like that that set Electric Eye apart in 1984, and why it was ranked #20 on a 2010 list of Greatest Christian Albums of All Time and #43 on CCM’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The constant theme running through this great project was alienation and lack of authentic relationship. Long before the iPhone, tablets and Facebook created shorter distances between those far away and longer distances from those most closest to us, the world still suffered the same plight. We are longing for contact and yet move mountains between us out of fear and pride. Advancements in technology only serves to make the plight more obvious. This would remain a trademark for the band. Authenticity was a rarity in the industry at the time and this band had it in spades. Loneliness and longing juxtaposed against hope and mercy permeate all three projects. There is never a point when the listener feels preached at, but rather the point of view always came across as the band was in it with their audience. Music and culture critic, DW Dunphy put it this way: I always believed Prodigal was always in the frame versus being the commentator outside of the frame. There were never airs about being the sanctified one shouting, ‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎÌ_??You need Jesus,‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_? but a recognition that we‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_̴Ìöve all sinned and come short of the glory of God, especially the forgiven.‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_? Just Like Real Life, the band‰ۡóÁÌ_́ÌÎ_̴Ìös third and last album is filled with so much great music and original concepts that any description will fail to do it justice. The title track is an endorphin rush of fast-riffing guitars and electrified, authentic vocals. It was the perfect release for 1983. Jerusalem proved once again they were masters at their craft. Retroactive Records has packaged this gem in a jewel case with a 12-page insert featuring band pics and lyrics. Great pains were made to make sure this classic was given the full reissue treatment by including two bonus tracks “Time” from the Front Row compilation and “Heartbeat (Light Remix” from the Tretti compilation. I honestly bought this ONLY to get Les Carlsen's signature because he was one of my influences in the mid to late 80's. I thought the music would stink -- based on the cover tunes I expected some Age of Aquarius elevator music crap. Besides, I don't dig most early 70s rock. Man, was I wrong! There's this really cool mix of Sabbath-like guitar, bass and drums with some tasteful mellotron and Moog sounds added in, really good vocals by Les and a neat mix of songs familiar and not. Even a couple of killer guitar solos, too, which I did not expect. It's definitely an early 70's time piece, but it's put together nicely and I recommend it for any Bloodgood fan who wants to see where Les was a decade opening cut “Valley Of The Shadows” reveals him sounding quite good, keeping in mind he is yet to fully develop the signature raspy to high end classic tenor style he ultimately perfected with Bloodgood. The point being he exhibits the abilities that would later allow him to become one of the more easily identifiable front men of his era.

Musically, “Valley Of The Shadows” is one of the albums finer, with the Sabbath-like riffs to cover its opening carrying over to its verse sections prior to an abrupt changeover to an angelic chorus to feature choir like vocal harmonies. Do I detect a faint precursor to opening Bloodgood cut “Accept The Lamb”? Speaking of time changes, song could not make more of a left turn over its final minute and a half as it takes a funk based direction as Gospel choirs repeat how the ‘walls of Jericho came tumbling down’.

“Elevator Operator” ensues as an upbeat classic rocker with a heavier edge. Shorter at just two and a half minutes, it features guitar tones to hint of The Who along with a jamming bass line to carry the low end in rabid fashion. Instrumentally, things change towards a darker direction to embody and eerie keyboard solo. You cannot say Carlsen did not surround himself with a group of talented musicians back in the day.

Albums first ballad “Hello There” floats its distance to acoustic guitar and orchestration as the artist bestows the smoother side to his groove direction realizes on “Can You Hear Me”. With another pronounced bass line leading the way, the song encapsulates grooving guitars with a strong does of melody while not backing from the instrumental focus, as found in the extended Hendrix style lead guitar! A spacey keyboard solo closes things out.

Two-part cut “Flesh Failures - Let The riffing leads the way (to drift between the left and right channels) alongside screaming feedback and a rollicking beat. Subsequent to two minutes, however, morphs into a ballad as keyboards take recognizable “It’s Alright” melody as an upbeat rocker to accent lightly done guitars and a full keyboard mix. Impetus further picks up for a groove to funk based instrumental section to convert into an acoustic guitar solo.

“Changing Me”, another come to mind at once Bloodgood track (also Out Of The class="style2">Eight and a half minute magnum opus closing cut “Battle Fatigue” is certain to delight progressive aficionados with its joining of moody emotion and pointedly victorious to make fashion in shored up by Gospel choirs. Exciting instrumental sections abound, including the first carried by distorted feedback drifting between the left and right channels and second home to guitar harmonies that transition to the melody of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. If Angelic Warlord were around in 1971, I would vote this song of the year.

In light more pleasantly surprised. Rather, it proves a musically a solid front to back release in highlighting some very strong material, noting anthems “Valley Of The Shadows” and “Battle Fatigue”, and what would go on to become classic Bloodgood tracks, referencing “Bad Credit” and “Changing Me”. Musicianship is also of high quality, and while yet to completely come into his own, Carlsen sounds fine in Five tracks from the debut would be completely re-recorded from the ground up, with significant differences in arrangement and production now that they were with a major label. Five other newly penned songs were also recorded, one of which was the anthemic “Standing On the Rock” which Heaven’s Metal Magazine editor Doug Van Pelt would go on to claim was, “one of the absolute best Christian rock songs of the era.” Powell's keyboards, which made Skynyrd's sound one of the most distinctive in rock and roll history, help Vision’s sound resonate with power and authority. Marshall’s crystal-clear rock voice (a la Steve Perry or Dennis DeYoung) brings clarity to a powerful message that continues to inspire and move people today. Vision put together all the necessities of a truly great rock band, combining elements of art rock with solid guitar-driven stadium rock. Marshall and company created a unique sound all their own that still sounds good 25+ years after it was first recorded! With prime riff-rockers from start to finish, this album is rock perfection. Steve Holland (Molly Hatchett) is quoted as saying, "Vision - I don't need no stinking Vision. I'm blind as a bat as it is....but this old bat has great hearing! And that's all you need to know with these guys! Wow!” Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, VISION is about an indomitable will; about survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American and stubbornly resolute. After 10 years of reissuing Christian rock and metal classics, this long out-of-print album has consistently been one of our most requested reissues. That’s why the label is thrilled to reissue it on CD for the very first time, remastered, with exclusive and insightful liner notes and 100% rock! Even fewer people knew that the band recorded a third album in 1986 that was never released! Retroactive Records has worked diligently with the band to unearth this classic rock masterpiece and make it widely available for the first time ever! Vision was known for powerful, anthemic classic rock, and that's exactly what Streetfighter is all about! This recording is arguably the bands strongest material, and includes the talents of Lynyrd Skynyrd piano player, Billy Powell! Billy's extraordinary talents help give Vision a very distinctive sound on this previously unreleased rock gem. Personal notes are included in the liner notes from David Brown (former Vice President of Heartland Records) and Barry Lee Harwood (former guitarist/vocalist and writer for The Rossington-Collins Band and Lynrd Skynyrd). For fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Forgeigner, and Boston! Comes in a full color 6 panel digipak. Most identify with Vision for its self-titled sophomore album from 1985, originally a Heartland Records release but later re-issued on Born Twice Records in 2010. Many are not aware of Vision’s 1984 debut, also self-titled but independently released, that due to receiving no distribution or promotion went out of print and turned into a hard to find collectors item. Said album was also re-issued on Born Twice in 2010 but under the new title Mountain In The Sky.

Streetfighter also escaped the attention of the music buying public, with the main reason being that it was never officially released back in the day (the album was recorded in a Florida beach house in 1986). The good news, however, is that Streetfighter was re-mastered and re-issued on Born Twice in the spring of 2011. Three additional tracks recorded by the band before it broke up in 1987 were included as well.

Vision, of course, gained acclaim for featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd members Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Billy Powell (piano). The two were brought on board after Lynyrd Skynyrd went on extended hiatus following the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed three of its members and seriously injured several others. Wilkeson appeared on just Mountain In The Sky while Powell contributed to all three.

In my reviews of Mountain In The Sky and Vision, I describe the group as “a joining of commercial hard rock and classic rock with a heavy seventies and eighties slant.” The same holds true here but - much to my delight - with a more consistent hard rocking edge. The southern influences that made their presence felt on the first two can be found on Streetfigher as well (think 38 Special), although to label Vision southern rock would be a misnomer.

One cannot help but be impressed with the all around heaviness to the Streetfighter material. This is best reflected in up-tempo pieces “Stop The Killing” and “I’m Gonna Live” in addition to “Streetfigher”, “Called To War” and “Mighty One”, perhaps the three heaviest tracks in the group’s repertoire. Those previously referenced southern influences, at the same time, make their mark on the boogie flavored “I’m Free” and bluesy “Rock This Town”. But when Vision tempers the pace they do so in style, and such is the case with the AOR touches of “I Know You” and “Break The Silence” and ballad “Come Home”.

The three bonus tracks maintain the hard rocking mindset, with “Born To Rock” and “Let’s Ride” heading in an upbeat direction and “Your Eyes” taking the smoother and more mid-paced approach.

Consistency would be the best way to define Streetfighter. Yes, with a 13 song album you are going to get your share of quality, but it is good quality in that while some songs are better than others there is nothing I skip over either. It all adds up to a satisfying front to back listening experience, the quintessential Vision album if you will.

One of my favorite aspects to Vision is front man Rocco Marshall. I described him in past reviews as “a terrific vocalist, (bringing) a crystal-clear rock voice that fans of Steve Perry (Journey), Steve Walsh (Kansas), Greg X. Volz (Petra) and Michael Gleason (AD) will be certain to appreciate”. Once more, the same holds true here, although on Streetfighter he adds some complementary heart, guts and soul to his delivery. Perhaps it is the group’s heavier direction but several songs, for instance, find him singing in a lower register (check out “Mighty One” and “Rock This Town”).

Guitar duties continue to be handled by Marshall and holdover Leonard Jones. As with the first two from Vision, you will find bountiful guitar harmonies along with duel lead guitar work that trends towards the blues driven (I do know who handles what solo, when and on which song but it is capably done).

Billy Powell, as one would imagine, cannot help but make an unmistakable imprint on any album he contributes. Yes, he “burns up the ivories” throughout, his distinct piano work standing out best on the albums more rocking material (“Streetfighter” and “Called To War” allow him to shine soloing wise).

Production backs away from much of the polish characterizing the self-titled release and trends towards a rawer sound more akin to Mountain In The Sky. In other words, you will find production in the right amount but not so much as to take away from the group’s trademark edge and bite.

Track By Track

Things get underway to two up-tempo rockers, “Stop The Killing” and “I’m Gonna Live”.

“Stop The Killing” is the heavier of the two with its brazen guitar walls and driving low-end mentality. But it is not all get up in that things taper for a contrastingly even sounding chorus. This one can best be described as quintessential hard rocking Vision.

“I’m Gonna Live” takes a melodic hard rock approach, reflected in the abundant backing vocals upholding its smoothly flowing chorus and pristine keyboards elements. Though guitars are not quite as upfront the bands inherit energy still stands out.

The three that follow brings some AOR elements.

Keyboards play a more pronounced role on “I Know You”, a light and airy piece hinting at the commercial with its relaxed flavorings and penchant for the mid-tempo. Bluesy guitar work helps put things over the top.

“Break The Silence” starts slowly but gradually builds into a full blown rocker. Chorus is upbeat and full of spirit while more polished backing vocals and refined keyboards play a leading role. Soloing again approaches the bluesy.

Heartfelt ballad “Come Home” highlights a precise melody. This one introduces orchestration and occasional rhythm guitar outbursts to create quite the stirring scene. If Streetfighter had been released back in the day I can see this garnering airplay on Christian radio.

A heavier rock direction is taken on the next three.

A forthright guitar emphasis returns on the albums title track. With a groove driven low-end leading the way, “Streetfighter” hits hard with its curtly done chorus but allows for traces of organ and complementary piano to highlight the backdrop.

“Called To War” delivers the forthright tempo. Crunchy guitars characterize this one, joining with more underpinning piano and heavy duty backing vocals to put in place quite the stalwart environs. The bands potential at its best can be found here.

What we have in “Mighty One” is the albums heaviest. The song brings an anthem-like presence as hard rocking guitars and accenting keyboards lead the way. Lead guitar is bluesy while a fitting keyboard solo is allowed.

Some bluesy southern flavorings can be found on the final two.

“I’m Free” delivers an up-tempo boogie rock sound. Powell’s ever present piano shines here, adding to the rollicking environs in which a catchy hook and bouncing rhythm prevails. This one is just plain fun to listen to.

The aptly entitled “Rock This Town” proves a gutsy blues driven rocker. Southern edges Vision at its best, the song delivers biting guitars in abundance and an up-tempo proclivity to pull you in on first listen.

The three bonus tracks fail to disappoint.

“Born To Rock” starts to an ethereal keyboard solo prior to kicking into high gear. The song lives up to its title the rest of the way, driven and steadfast while delivering a thick as it gets low end and dogged chorus.

“Your Eyes” takes a calmer and more tempered approach. This, however, does not mean it is any less heavy in that quite the decisive rhythm guitar makes its presence felt. Melody is pronounced as is a distinguishable bass line.

“Let’s Ride” proves a powerhouse rocker. Heavy duty in capacity, the song highlights a no-nonsense chorus and driving mentality bordering on the tenacious. The fitting drum rolls and fills only enhance the creativity here.

I have always felt that Mountain In The Sky includes some of the best Vision material. The self-titled release had its good moments but the polished production drained the band of some of its natural grit and edge. Streetfighter, on the other hand, succeeds with its consistent songwriting and decision to back off a bit in terms of production. Records. While the debut is a fist-pumping thrash metal extravaganza that deserves a home in every self-respecting metalhead’s collection, If But For One demonstrates epic growth and musical maturity rarely seen from one album to the next. In fact, with 1990’s Perpetual Defiance being such an elite album, one could easily expect IBFO to be a let-down. Instead, IBFO offers a thrashing masterpiece that is progressive, thought-filled, spiritual, and definitively skull-crushing! IBFO is nothing less than a maelstrom of metallic fallout. Tossing aside the by-the-numbers thrash, Detritus catapulted into one of metal's most innovative outfits, ever. In fact, the 2013 Deliverance release is a nice hybrid of the styles that have characterized the band’s two decades of existence. Jimmy is accompanied by axeman extraordinaire Michael Phillips, his faithful bassist Manny Morales and none other than Jayson Sherlock of Mortification and Horde fame pounding out the drum rhythms. It is a great line-up and the high expectations that come with being an iconic metal band have been met, and then some! "The Annals of Subterfuge" and "Angst" will satisfy the fans of their early thrash era being a full-on heavy metal assault, but other tracks that could have easily been recorded on other “big D” albums. Leave it to Jimmy Brown to stay fresh and experimental without sacrificing the heaviness and all-out metal foundation of the mighty Deliverance sound. You get a Maiden cover "Where Eagles Dare" (which is very well done by the way) and a German version of "Detox," and for the 2019 Retroactive Records re-release you get an exclusive bonus track, “Spieluhr” which is a Rammstein cover. The re-release is packaged in a 4 panel jewel case, and is the same mastering as the original release, except for the bonus track. Deliverance was the first Christian extreme metal band to really enjoy success back in the day and the longevity they've enjoyed is a testament to both the quality and integrity of the music and the musicians who have participated in the band over all these years. You can lose control. You can lose your very identity. You can lose your personal autonomy. Assimilation is very dangerous. Beware. Music critic Angelic Warlord, called Assimilation “the most musically consistent effort from the band since its critically acclaimed 1993 work Learn.” Tracks such as “The Circle” and “Save Me From…” will pull you in with their technical prowess, while “Assimilation” and “Between 2 Worlds” give rise to a resounding heaviness. “The Limitless Light” and “Impressions,” on the other hand, bring chorus hooks of a gripping capacity.

Assimilation finds founding member Jimmy P. Brown II in top form with his doom-like and low key David Bowie meets Geoff Tate (Queensryche) lead vocal abilities. As a rhythm guitar, he adorns the full length of the project with his mega-tight riffs and chops-placed right up front in the mix where they belong. Longtime Deliverance bassist Manny Morales makes his presence felt as well in furnishing an abundance of unwavering bass lines. Keyboardist David Gilbreath, of course, adds the industrial element to the band’s sound, his accentuating but not overriding work bringing out the best in the quality material here. Out of Deliverance’s epic catalog of transformational albums, Assimilation is one of the top favorites at Retroactive Records! As we said....resistance is futile. You will be Assimilated! The direction the band takes here is a modern groove metal sound interlaced with some techno loops for cool effect. Surprisingly, the basic Deliverance sound is intact – the clear progression from the last release Camelot In Smithereens, but with a decidedly heavier vibe. Some of the “alternative” feel to the last album can also be heard here, but this is metal and these songs are really heavy. Deliverance fans could not be more pleased by Jimmy’s comeback. The strong lyrical base he has given to so many of his songs are present here and the content reminds this listener of the Learn material. Jimmy continues to use the newer vocal style, with some of those Bowie-like lows, but I think his voice sounds better than ever. Song length is a bit short, but it really makes this disc great to listen to in one sitting because the songs just flow nicely from one to the next. Consistent with the current trend in metal there are no guitar wailing solos here, which may disappoint some older fans. No indie mix here, these songs sound great, and album artwork is extremely cool as well. Unlike some of the Deliverance albums of past where there was always a song or two that was an outlier, like “Horrendous Disc” from Stay Of Execution, or “Map” from River Disturbance and “Beauty And The Beast” from Camelot…, this album is consistently metal from start to finish. Moreover, there is a sense of cohesion from song topic to song, a quality that made the Learn album so enjoyable. Make no mistake, this is fearful but it is not Fearful Symmetry. This is metal, pounding riff for pounding riff, and Deliverance is back in full force. Jimmy and the boys have nothing to be ashamed of here.

Dale Thompson of BRIDE

2018 Retroactive Records

RRCD1473

UPC: 637405138870

CD 6 Page insert with lyrics

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Perpetual Paranoia is Dale Thompson, best known as the frontman of legendary Christian metal band, Bride and The World Will Burn and the Brazilian, Tiago James de Souza, an extraordinary musician best known as the guitarist of Bay Area, California thrash metal band, Hand Of Fire! With Perpetual Paranoia the band is unleashing pure metal mayhem! The Reaper specializes in blunt force trauma that magically transforms brutality into catchy! This is ultra-creative, aggressive HEAVY METAL performed with both skill and precision. Dale’s vocals are more aggressive than anything he’s ever done, while never losing his signature sounds. Tiago is a guitarist’s guitarist - laying down tasty riffs and solos at an elite level. And, while many aggressive metal bands are simply cookie-cutter copy-cats, Perpetual Paranoia utilizes double-bass to hammer home an album filled with progressive, passionate moments that keep the listener on the edge of the seat with a growing anticipation that is ultimately fulfilled. The Reaper strikes a signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, as the album progresses forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Not one dimensional at all, multi-layered soundscapes dominate every song. Expect tons of time changes. Every song is a journey of thrashy aggression and darkness. The Reapers will be on many people’s best of 2018 list, and yes, it’s that good!

Tracks
Intro
The Reapers
Whatever It Takes
I Say Jesus
Your Sin Will Find You
The Veil
The God Syndrome
Romance X
Holy Ghost
Let the Dead Bury the Dead
Ten Thousand Saints
Dream Before the Nightmare

DELIVERANCE - HEAR WHAT I SAY! Wonderland debut came out in 1992 and independent sophomore effort Glimmer Of Hope three years later.

<span heavier material of Barren Cross but fused with the darker and more portentous metal to thrash leanings of early Bride releases Live To Die (1988) and Silence Is Madness (1989) . Strong Deliverance influences are found as well, including technical metal elements similar to Stay Of Execution (1992) in addition to equal doses of old school thrash from the self-titled debut (1989) and Weapons Of nuances of her vocal abilities. However, such is not the case with the demos in that her delivery reflects that much more guts, heart and emotion. Yes, she makes priority to exhibit some serious muscle and projection filled backbone (with the falsettos to match), but when need calls she can also reach down for some courser, lower register angst. It adds up to a performance I see appealing to those into fiery vocalists such as Nancy Jo Mann (Barnabas) and Christine Steel (Arsenal) in addition to the grittier flavorings of Lisa Faxon (Ransom) and Anji Cornette Originally released in 1994 by Nuclear Blast, this album created controversy among black metal fans and allegedly saw death threats delivered to Nuclear Blast due to its anti-satanic lyrics. The sole member of the band, Jayson Sherlock, who used the pseudonym Anonymous, is best known as the drummer on the early and classic Mortification albums and later for joining doomsters Paramaecium. Norwegian for “holy unblack”, Hellig Usvart is considered a landmark release, regarded as the first and most ground-breaking Christian (un)black metal album.)

Playing all instruments, as well as handling production and mixing, Sherlock created an extreme album similar to early 1990s Norwegian black metal – cold, primitive, lo-fi. With brutal blast beats, furious buzzing guitars, ambient keyboards and intense shrieked vocalist, this is old-school. Raw and grim and having reached cult status, this classic is now readily available again!

TRACK LISTING:
A Church Bell Tolls Amidst The Frozen Nordic Winds
Blasphemous Abomination Of The Satanic Pentagram
Behold, The Rising Of The Scarlet Moon
Thine Hour Hast Come
Release And Clothe The Virgin Sacrifice
Drink From The Chalice Of Blood
Silence The Blasphemous Chanting
Invert The Inverted Cross
An Abandoned Grave Bathes Softly In The Falling Moonlight
Crush The Bloodied Horns Of The Goat
Weak, Feeble And Dying Anti-Christ
The Day Of Total Armageddon Holocaust

Bonus Track
Mine Heart Doth Beseech Thee (O Master)
