The great genius of pop music most hurt by this injustice is Terry Taylor of DA, and the strongest support for this argument can be found on the band's great classic album, Doppelganger.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\u003cp\u003eTaylor's brilliant satire of popular culture \"Mall\" the radio station in St Paul, MN began giving significant support to an enjoyable, but lesser song with almost the exact lyrics and ideas, \"Escalator of Life,\" right down to the mannequin imagery.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\u003cp\u003eTaylor's brilliant attacks on televangelists in \"I Didn't Build it For Me\" and \"New Car\" predate the Swaggart\/Bakker and more recent Robert Tilton fiascos. Elsewhere, as in \"Here I Am,\" \"Youth With A Machine\" and \"Autographs for the Sick,\" DA predates ideas that have made others a heap of money in pursuit of MTV fame \u0026amp; teenage superstardom.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\u003cp\u003eThis is the record that was amazingly ahead of its time. This is the DA record that could have catapulted them into mainstream success if anybody had invested enough money into their career. This is the record you should buy immediately. So it's a shame when Fluid falls flat, which it does almost immediately. Despite the fact that songs like \"Crash\" are driven by scorching electric leads and deft choruses, Fluid feels more formulaic than Knott's early records. Unlike the dark, harrowing, claustrophobic Screaming Brittle Siren, Fluid is submerged in studio sheen. The songs are slick and radio-friendly, especially the plodding \"Stars\" and \"Thru.\" But the biggest error on the record is Knott's atypical literalness. Though The Grape Prophet was based on a very specific story, Knott sang in such abstract terms that the record never sounded forced or ponderous. On Fluid, just the opposite is true. He is constantly singing directly about Jennie Mae (frequently invoking her name), and his prose is clunky and indelicate (\"Kiss me once before I die\/This gaping hole has made a pool\/It feels so cold when you break the rules\"). The strongest song on the record is written from the perspective of the devil. He sings about junkie rock stars and deranged girlfriends in a direct, plainspoken manner that belies the lunacy of his subject matter. An entire track is built around the repeated phrase \"I'm on fire\/I'm burnin' on fire,\" and \"Tattoo,\" the record's strongest song, seems to tell of a prostitution ring gone awry. Adding to the overall aura of insanity is the fact that Knott's guitar was purloined and de-tuned by his daughter, Stormie Lane, hours before the recording was to begin. Knott liked the new tunings so much that he retained them for the record. As a result, notes are unnaturally bent and the sound of loose strings snapping against the fretboard causes the guitar itself to serve as another percussion instrument. Strip Cycle also finds Knott speaking candidly about two intensely personal subjects: his dire financial straits and his constant battle with alcoholism. The former is the subject of \"Bad Check.\" Against a weeping cello and warped acoustic strum, Knott sighs, \"Sometimes I wish those shiny red lights on cop cars were just big bright cherries\/I wanna bowl\/I wanna knock down some pins.\" It is a moment of naked honesty that ranks among Knott's finest moments.
