Even though a number of bands have had the label \"punk\" used to describe some of their output (Altar Boys and Undercover have probably had to bear this cross more than others), no Christian artists on a major label have really sought to go hardcore, avoiding the accessibility of mainstream rock and pop sounds. Real thrash acts like the now-defunct One Bad Pig and the buzzsaw Florida-based trio, The Lead, have been relegated to independent distribution and word-of-mouth publicity. To my knowledge, Nobody Special by Pat Nobody, the brother of ex-Undercover band leader Joey Taylor, was the first record of its kind to be made available wherever quality Christian rock is sold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd the key word is \"quality\". Nobody, with the aid of producer and keyboardist Taylor, drums by Gene Eugene (Adam Again), and guitar solos by Chris Brigandi (previously of the Lifters and Wild Blue Yonder), has laid down 15 hard-edged songs that are special indeed. Direct, often blatant lyrics ring true on Nobody's lips, and the intensity of music and emotion of message bring integrity to things that would sound silly or crude printed on paper (\"I've had nails through my hands and feet\/ I've hung from a tree like a piece of meat\"). Their name comes from the 1985 movie, The Goonies, 'slick shoes' being one of the character Data's many gadgets. Formed in 1994 and then the band was on an \"indefinite hiatus\", that ended on March 1, 2008, when they played first show back together. It took place at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOrange County, CA-based Christian punk-pop outfit Slick Shoes formed in 1994 from the ashes of the local band Today's Special, reuniting guitarist Jackson Mould with drummer Joe Nixon. Over the next year, the duo worked at writing songs before recruiting bassist Jeremiah Brown; Mould initially assumed vocal duties, but with the addition of then 14-year-old frontman Ryan Kepke, the Slick Shoes lineup was complete, and within two weeks, the band signed to the Tooth \u0026amp; Nail label to issue their self-titled 1997 debut EP. The full-length Rusty followed later that same year, and upon adding second guitarist Dale Yob, the group recorded 1998's Burn Out. Both Mould and Yob soon exited, and with new guitarist Greg Togawa, Slick Shoes returned as a four-piece in mid-2000 with Wake Up Screaming, quickly followed by a split EP with Cooter (the band that would later be renamed Autopilot Off) recorded for the Fueled by Ramen imprint. After a tour with MxPx and additional shows with Tooth \u0026amp; Nail artists Ace Troubleshooter, Calibretto 13, and Rod Laver, Slick Shoes issued their fourth album, a self-titled effort in April 2002. Following the album's recording, several more lineup changes ensued. Brown exited to be replaced by bassist Kevin Clark; both guitarists eventually left as well and Jonah Peterson and David Stoltenberg would ultimately fill those positions. Far from Nowhere appeared the next summer on Side One Dummy, which preceded that fall's The Biggest and Best greatest-hits compilation. The eventual addition of bassist Chris Brink made them a quartet, and a musical mission trip to Romania (where they were sent by a museum commemorating that country's resistance movement during the Communist regime) gave them their name. Let Love Win is their debut album, and if their sound at this point isn't terribly distinctive, it's certainly unusually mature and well-developed for a band just starting out; this is solid, meat-and-potatoes Christian rock that occasionally nods crunchily toward an indie edge, but never quite gets there. Not that they should have to, of course; there's nothing wrong with meat-and-potatoes rock \u0026amp; roll, and when they rock the hardest, their Christian message sounds the most sincere. When they indulge in power ballads (such as the forgettable \"My Help Comes from the Lord\" and \"The Call\") they tend to succumb to the excesses of the genre, but midtempo burners like \"Never Look Away,\" \"You Are Love,\" and the excellent \"Radiance\" are as hard-hitting as any secular rock song. And \"The Only One\" shows that they can make the power ballad work: the hook in the chorus will stick with you for days. Let Love Win may not break any new stylistic ground, but again, there's no real reason why it should. Their sophomore effort boasts some of the best-crafted songs to come along in recent memory. \"Captives Come Home\" encapsulates the urgency and earnestness that have given power pop a surprisingly long reign on the airwaves. \"My Sweet Escape\" is a Green Day-esque adventure of personal ambition. Where Love at the Core comes through less successfully is in creating an identity. They stopped to get something to eat in St. Louis at a Pizza Hut that was doing a promotion with local radio station KSHE FM95. Available for purchase were promotional wrap-around sunglasses which featured the radio station mascot: a tough-looking pig wearing a muscle shirt and sunglasses, sporting a Mohawk haircut and earring, holding an electric guitar. Carey, being the gifted evangelist he is, also interjected passionate \"sermons\" throughout.  After the initial shock, the response was apparently positive enough for the band to take their brand of craziness to the clubs in town, (The band even sold out of the small run of t-shirts printed up just for that show).\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor months prior to this event, Carey and Paul were spending their weekends talking to the kids who hung around the punk clubs, striking up conversations about God. With the success of the Labor Day concert, they decided to go into these same clubs as One Bad Pig, thus giving them some clout with the punk crowd. The early years were filled with  extremes. Playing in clubs, the band found acceptance in terms of their music, but as a result of their upfront message, they found themselves the targets for insults, obscenities, spit, beer and bottles. In time the band also  ventured into the church venue, but many times found just the opposite dynamic there. The message was well received, but the music style was given to much controversy. This juxtaposition the band found themselves in led to the title of their first independent recording \"A Christian Banned.\" Nevertheless - armed with their new tunes \"hot off the press\" they headed back to Cornerstone Festival 1986, this time not as music fans joking about a fictional band, but to play a concert as the very real One Bad Pig. Seasoned with the experiences of the past year, the band gave a performance that created a buzz at the festival. The album sold like lemonade in the Sahara Desert, and the whole supply of records brought was soon going home with their new-found fans.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOver the next year and a half, the band travelled across the country on weekends playing to enthusiastic crowds. Billy produced young bands and the Q-Pek Band was scheduled to open for WhiteHeart, and the band was hoping he would like and produce the band. Billy was on the catwalk above the stage while the Q-Pek Band played below. Well, it turned out he didn't much care for the Q-Pek Band, but when I happened to mention that Paul also had another band called One Bad Pig, he said, \"No kidding? I've heard of them. I've been wanting to meet them.\" So while Paul's band (including Phillip Owens) was still playing, the band’s manager got Carey out of the audience and dragged him up on the catwalk to meet Billy. I think Billy was a little surprised. Billy and the Pigs all got together the next day for lunch.
