His extremely dynamic vocal range and powerful delivery, combined with his ability to produce smartly constructed and lavishly mixed compositions, resulted in memorable music – music which certainly raised the quality meter to the highest levels within the Christian market at the time and simultaneously garnered credibility for Christian hard rock and melodic metal worldwide. Most critics would agree An Axe To Grind was his most diverse record to date when it was originally released in 1990 and the talents he employed were quite remarkable (Lanny Cordola along with new sensation Scott Van Zen on guitars, Chuck Wright on bass, Roger Mielke on keyboards and Ken Mary on drums – among others). Furthermore, many of the musical ideas and styles on Axe later showed up in some form or another on the legendary Big Bang album. It's been 30 years in the making and with this amazing orange, red and yellow splatter it's hotter than ever....But the real treat is the addition of 3 of the 4 song demo tracks that we were able to fit on Side 2. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe stories the Ken and Chuck share are nothing short of amazing and explain the miracle that almost never was, stories from the road as well as photos and even some surprises which we are not announcing quite yet, but will soon. \u003c\/span\u003eIn 1987 Chuck was playing with the band Idle Cure but looking for more of a permanent role in music and simply trying to find the right path. Ken Tamplin was a guitarist in the band Joshua and was himself wanting to try something new. Shout was born. \u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eShout signed a deal with Frontline Records in 1987, after submitting a 3 song demo to Frontline and went on to record their first album, “It’s Won’t Be Long”. It was recorded with session musicians including Lanny Cordola (Magdalen), Marty Friedman (Megadeth) and Michael Angelo (Nitro) but soon after recruited the bassist Loren Robinson and drummer Joseph Galletta from his former band Joshua\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003eTamplin and King made quite the duo and were able to not only put together amazing harmonies, but had the screaming guitar hooks and vocal chops that rival some of the biggest bands of the day. Very few bands even came close to touching this masterpiece.  Shout focused its efforts on music quality, something that the Christian rock fans were really clamoring for. Too many bands of that era focused 90% on ministry and 10% on music. Shout had no interest living ministry behind, but new that the industry needed top quality musicianship. But when the title track IT WON’T BE LONG starts off, you find out that this album is going to have one hit after another, with power metal anthems through-out and one of the best front-to-back run of songs of any album to come out of the 80’s. I will warn you... they sound incredible.  They do not sound like bad quality demos at all, they are in-fact the exact demos that Ken shopped to Atlantic, Enigma and Capitol Records looking for a mainstream deal after landing a deal with Frontline. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eShout,\u003c\/strong\u003e fittingly the first demo song is a bit stripped down, more raw without all the flying guitars and straight up in your face heavy-rock-hitter. It has a really cool guitar solo version on the tail end right before the bridge. Ken's vocals are clear and crisp with little over-production.  Some keyboards were added through out this song giving it more of that mid-80's feel especially when the song breaks 3\/4 of the way through. No, there is no break down, don't panic. The song stops for a second and restarts, just like the album version did. While with the latter group, he also began a solo career. A musician’s musician (and first cousin to Sammy Hagar), Tamplin is widely known and respected within the general market—especially for his incredible four-to-five-octave voice, arguably one of the best in rock and roll. He is able to count Peter Frampton, John Entwistle (of The Who), Jeff Lynne (of ELO), and Robin Zander (of Cheap Trick) among his fans. An advertisement for 1993’s Tamplin included testimonials to the artist by members of Boston, Foreigner, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, and Toto. Tamplin was brought up in a Christian home and began playing guitar at the age of six. When he was twelve, he almost died when a homemade rocket exploded in his presence; years later, he would still describe his recovery from this accident as “a medically documented case of miraculous healing through prayer.” Nevertheless, he was quick to backslide and spent the next year of young adolescence dealing cocaine and other drugs. Four overdoses on angel dust kept him in touch with mortality and, at fourteen, he says, he finally recommitted his life to Christ and has “been on fire for him ever since.” Ken Tamplin 925 An Axe to Grind was recorded after the demise of Shout and prior to Tamplin’s album with Magdallan. It is a loose and experimental affair, featuring eclectic outings with diverse session musicians and friends. Five tracks are instrumentals. Most of the tracks are stereotypical hard rock in the mode of Def Leppard, with “Holding On” being one of the most Shout-like. There are a couple of Petra-ish power ballads (“Never Give Up,” “I Hear Cryin’ ”). “Believin’ Is the Hardest Part” offers overtly evangelical lyrics set to a Beatlesque acoustic tune. On Soul Survivor, Tamplin would leave most of the guitar playing to his cohort Steve Van Zen and concentrate on vocal histrionics. The sophomore project moves even further toward the more commercial sound of groups like Boston or Journey, mixing hard tracks like “Take It Now (or Nothing)” with more artrock meanderings like “(I’m Gonna) Live Forever.” Tamplin is perhaps his career high point as a solo artist, filled with commercial hard rock songs like “Suspicious Eyes” and “Slave Trade” (on the trap of materialism, i.e., being a slave to mammon). “Mystery Train” has a big melodic chorus, and “Testify” incorporates traditional gospel influences. On the song “Don’t Let the Sky Fall on Me,” the artist somewhat presumptuously offers testimony to his own righteousness as a protection against divine judgment: “I’ve seen crooked men walk a crooked mile \/ Yet I’ve resisted the devil’s daughter of desire \/ So don’t let the sky fall on me.” In the Witness Box finds Tamplin taking on a number of social issues. “Feed Me” deals with media sensationalism in a manner similar to Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry,” while “Strange Fascination” puts the shoe on the other foot and examines the public appetites that drive such frenzies. Alcoholism is addressed in “Death by Inches,” and racial tension, in “Colorline.” The song “Alma Rose” is a tribute to a Jewish violinist who was forced to play at executions inside a concentration camp. Although Witness Box is mostly hard rock, Tamplin also performs the classic praise song “Sing Hallelujah” and delivers a bizarre cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” rewritten with new, Christianized lyrics. On We the People, Tamplin would declare that he was “broadening his horizons” and attempting to reach a different audience. Abandoning the hard rock genre altogether, he now works with a twelve-piece string orchestra, horns, and a church choir. The eclectic album includes entrees into a wide variety of styles, including adult contemporary and synthdriven dance tracks. “There’s a Way” is a Latin number, and “When Angels Cry” (an antiabortion song) incorporates a bit of disco. The connecting link that holds most of the disparate sounds together seems to be a Motown influence, rarely evident in Tamplin’s previous work (except perhaps in the aforementioned Wonder cover). Tamplin also sings in a lower register on the album, almost making the material sound like that of a different artist. We the People would be Tamplin’s last project to receive notice in the Christian media, though he continued to record and release independent albums. In 2001, he produced a compilation of worship songs called Make Me Your Voice (Benson) as a benefit album for victims of persecution in the Sudan (such artists as Andraé Crouch and Charlie Peacock contributed to the project). At that time, it was reported that he was serving as music director of the Living Stones Fellowship in California, where his brother Lance was pastor. He had recently written music for the motion pictures The Perfect Storm and Joan of Arc and for the TV series The XFiles. However make no mistake about it, this is a straight forward metal and hard rock album containing some of his hardest rockers. Songs like Feed Me, leave little guessing that this album is going to smack you right in the face. Guest guitarists include Joey Taffolla (\u003cstrong\u003eJag Panzer\u003c\/strong\u003e) and Lanny Cordola (\u003cstrong\u003eHouse of Lords)\u003c\/strong\u003e. Don't let the \"blues\" tag scare you, it really kicks into a full-throttle rocker in no time.  Don't sleep on this.  I know that words like \"blues\" and \"artrock\" could be scary for metalheads, but I can promise you that this album kicks butt. Even the second songs starts with a capella intro that is creative but left rockers scratching their head in 1991, but after all these years it comes off more genius than anything, because the song really picks up and moves you. When song 3 and 4, HARD TIMES COMIN' and STAND UP, drops those guitars on this remastered CD will bring a smile \u003cstrong\u003eand fist pump from every rocker\u003c\/strong\u003e. But the song TAKE IT NOW, kicks it into overdrive for sure although \u003c\/span\u003eTamplin would leave most of the guitar playing to Steve Van Zen and concentrate on vocal histrionics. He is able to count Peter Frampton, John Entwistle (of The Who), Jeff Lynne (of ELO), and Robin Zander (of Cheap Trick) among his fans. An advertisement for 1993’s Tamplin included testimonials to the artist by members of Boston, Foreigner, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, and Toto. Tamplin was brought up in a Christian home and began playing guitar at the age of six.
