It's a timeless style pure and simple. Although it's the songs themselves that standout on PUPPET OF DESTRUCTION the musicianship and vocals are certainly worth noting. The rhythm guitars are reminiscent of early Metallica and Exodus whereas the lead guitars are unschooled with a melodic haunting vibe (think Mercyful Fate). The drums \u0026amp; bass are professional and totally solid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs for the vocals, people will likely either love or hate Scott Waters. On this recording he sounds like a mixture of Steve Souza, Dave Mustaine and Udo yet with his own unique flair. He sorta sounds like a snake if it became human and fronted a metal band (huh?). One great thing about Scott's vocals is that he is able to acclimate to the needs of the song and make it \"work,\" if you know what I mean. Hence, although he's technically not a great singer like Dio, he utilizes his vocal talents in such a way that keeps the songs from being one-dimensional and boring. Dio, by contrast, has the unfortunate tendency to sound the same song to song.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePUPPET OF DESTRUCTION is highlighted by some of the best songs in the history of metal -- \"Never,\" \"Puppet of Destruction\" and \"World of Sin,\" whereas \"Mortal Stomp,\" \"Scorn,\" \"Gutterbox\" and \"Crosshope\" aren't that far behind. And the remaining three could hardly be categorized as filler. This is quality cd from beginning to end, pure and simple, which is why I rate it so highly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lyrical themes are another highlight. You don't have to worry about well-worn material here like dungeons, dragons, horror-gore and silly sci-fi sheet (not that there's anything wrong with that). The lyrics address numerous interesting topics usually with a spiritual edge from a biblical standpoint. \"Never\" is about maintaining one's integrity as musical styles come in and out of popularity. The chorus is particularly innovative (lyrically and musically). \"Puppet of Destruction\" is about metal bands that have nothing better to sing about than death, destruction, satan and horror\/gore. What happens to the minds that continually take in such garbage? (Garbage in, garbage out). Again, the chorus is outstanding. And \"Gutterbox\" is about tv addiction or couch potato-ism. This is just a taste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe production is great as far as clarity of instruments and mix goes, but it lacks bottom-end heaviness. Not that it's some wimpy album or anything -- far from it -- just that the guitars lack that ultra-heavy sound. Musically, Tourniquet's style is a mix of hardcore, hard rock, technical metal, speed metal, alternative and groove. They are able to blend all of these elements with melody and originality. Tourniquet even incorporates classical music into many of their guitar riffs. One can hear elements of Metallica, Anthrax, Hades, Whiplash, Watchtower and Shadows Fall in their music. The band consists of Ted Kirkpatrick (drums), Luke Easter (vocals) and Steve Andino (bass). For their 11th album, \"Where Moth And Rust Destroy\", Ted Kirkpatrick wrote all of the music, with Easter contributing lyrics on a few tracks. Kirkpatrick also played all of the rhythm guitar parts. Tourniquet even had Marty Friedman (Megadeth, Cacophony) and Bruce Franklin (Trouble, Supershine) provide all of the killer guitar solos. The album was produced by veteran Bill Metoyer and Kirkpatrick. Most of the songs on \"Where Moth And Rust Destroy\" can be classified as mini epics, averaging seven minutes in length. They are filled with exciting twists and breaks, containing a lot of variation ranging from fast thrash metal, mid-paced melodic sections to acoustic parts. Even a violin has been added to enhance the atmosphere. The songs are in no terms boring musically or lyrically. The musicianship is tight and the production is crystal clear. Kirkpatrick is an awesome drummer. You haven't heard drumming this technical since Neal Pert or Mike Portnoy. It's hard to believe that Easter does all of the vocals because he can sound like three different people. From soft singing and mid range vocals to hardcore like shouts. You can tell just by looking at the album cover that Where Moth and Rust Destroy is metal and nothing less. Tourniquet delivers an hour of solid metal. It's not death metal or metalcore, but thrash metal, reminiscent of Megadeth or Metallica. The Megadeth comparison is quite accurate, too, since the former guitarist of Megadeth(Marty Friedman) joined Tourniquet as a guest to add his guitar skills. These guys have been around for decades now, so fans that have not already experienced Tourniquet, but enjoy the less scream and growl oriented metal, should be sure to check this out. One need look no further than the groups early seventies Contemporary Christian Music scene beginnings, where it got its start playing acoustic based Gospel rock (sort of like the Maranatha! bands of the period from Los Angeles) in working closely with juvenile halls, the California Youth Authority and California State and Federal Prisons. Later morphing into a plugged in Christian rock act, Gideon?s Army expanded upon its outreach by also including street ministry (Jews for Jesus and S.O.S. San Francisco) along with Christian coffee houses and an ongoing concert ministry with performances at Great America, Oakland Civic Auditorium and H.P. Pavilion San Jose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was not until 1982 that Gideon?s Army released its full-length debut Rock N? Roll For Your Soul, which potentially got lost in the shuffle of much heavier contemporaries such as Resurrection Band, Petra, Jerusalem, Daniel Band, Servant and Barnabas among others. It also did not help that Rock N? Roll For Your Soul suffered from the same low distribution and lack of promotion often inherit to independent releases of the time, noting how the Vision self-titled debut from 1984 also fell beneath the radar for the same reasons. Nevertheless, after having been out of print and next to impossible to find for decades, Rock N? Roll For Your Soul has been given a second chance at life after having been re-mastered and re-issued by Retroactive Records in the fall of 2015.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMusically, early eighties Gideon?s Army took a strong rhythm and blues slant in featuring a jazzy horn section and duel guitar attack of founding members Dave Angels and Mike Banke. But labeling Gideon?s Army as just rhythm \u0026amp; blues would also be inaccurate and potentially misleading in that Rock N? Roll For Your Soul also reflects nuances of classic rock, AOR, hard rock, Southern rock and even some progressive aspects, particularly in light of how half the albums 8 tracks extend into 6 to 7 minute range. When placed alongside follow up efforts Warriors Of Love (1986) and Grace (1990), both of which took a melodic rock to AOR heading, Rock N? Roll For Your Soul proves the most experimental and multi-dimensional of the three Gideon?s Army recordings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTake six-minute opening cut ?Light?, for instance, a slow and moody six and a half minutes carried by copious (and very flattering) Hammond B3, a marked bass presence and light rhythm guitar underpinnings. Where the song shines is during its instrumental moments, including the fusion to feedback driven first minute and instrumental break at the halfway point in which organ and lead guitar contest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGideon?s Army reflects its rhythm \u0026amp; blues sentiments on the two that follow. ?Dreams? jumps out of the gate at once, a frolicking and mirthful happy go lucky piece carried by a spicy horn section and Second Coming based lyrical themes. Searing lead guitar aligns with the blithe scene. ?Lift Your Heart? takes a more mid-paced approach, calmly maneuvering its first minute to guitar feedback only to gain impetus as the group?s signature horn section returns over a layer of funk-flavored bass. ?The Lift your heart unto the Lord? vocal harmonies help make a worshipful statement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e?What Is Love? represents this reviewer?s choice track from its reserved progressive mentality. Albums longest at seven minutes, the song proves another deliberate and melancholic plodder in similar fashion as ?Light?, exuding a forthright keyboard mix and even textures of rhythm guitars. What sets ?What Is Love? apart is the extended instrumental section that features tightly woven guitar harmonies of an emotional Southern nature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHalfway through the album and one cannot help but embrace the Gideon?s Army co-lead vocal approach, with front men Dave Angels and drummer Jerry Anderson bringing a similar classic tenor and melodic tinctured vocal style. Besides, you know you are dealing with a group that arose out of the seventies when you have a drummer that is also a lead vocalist!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMelodic hard rocker ?Better Days? ranks with the albums heaviest. The keyboards at the start of the song would not sound out of place on the first couple Boston albums, while the distinct guitars that ensue deliver ample doses of edge and bite in aligning with layered vocal melodies of a copious nature. Helping to take ?Better Days? past the six-minute mark is an extended jam-fusion instrumental section in which the group highlights its abundant musicianship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThree and a half minute ?On The Move? is the most guitar driven of the rhythm \u0026amp; blues numbers. Aligning a rollicking horn section with sharp rhythm guitars, the song gives rise to high-energy groove in abundance within a concise up-tempo package. The cool Southern flavorings return for the instrumental moments. Whereas my favorite Rock N? Roll For Your Soul moments are its most progressive, the rhythm \u0026amp; blues cuts are laudable all the same- I rate them a slight notch below in above average to good territory (fans of early Sweet Comfort Band should feel right at home, though).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e?New Man?, last of the six-minute tracks, also stands out with a reserved and moderate disposition. The song sets a steadfast tempo, aligning another horn section with soothing tinctures of organ and a big as it gets bass line. More melodic vocal harmonies help tie everything together. My favorite part is the saxophone solo that carries things instrumentally (sort of like ?The Return? off Rez Band?s Awaiting Your Reply from 1978).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEnding the album is ?Can You Still Turn Away??, a relaxed and laid-back five minutes in which Hammond B3 (the work of keyboardist Doug Naruo deserves note) plays a heightened role along with plenty of distinct saxophone throughout. Some very complementary bluesy tinctures rise to the surface in the process. Yes, a good way to close things out, but I also cannot help but feel a better balanced track listing might have resulted if another heavier rocking and up-tempo track had been included instead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs one might imagine for an independent early eighties release, production sounds a bit dated but not to a fault when factoring the Retroactive re-mastering. While I do not have an original copy of Rock N? Roll For Your Soul to invite comparison, overall sound avoids any overriding thinness or muddiness. Musical variations also play a key role in that how many of the Gideon?s Army contemporaries mixed aspects of classic and Southern rock, AOR, rhythm \u0026amp; blues and progressive rock and make it work in such a concise package?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUltimately, I feel a great deal of the Rock N? Roll For Your Soul success attributes to its independent release, which allowed Gideon?s Army to exercise that much more creative freedom in light of how different the album might have turned out if released on a CCM label. By going independent the group did not have to worry about some slick label executive hovering over its shoulders and suggesting ?Guys in order to make this work, I am going to need you to stick to a three and a half minute verse-chorus-verse format for me, OK?. Hence, the musical experimentation and songs extended past six minutes that you did not often see from early eighties Christian groups. Children of the Day should probably be viewed as the world's first \"contemporary Christian music\" group--except that it was called Jesus Music back then. It was an album that defined the Jesus movement as well as any other album ever would and it became a national phenomenon. As one historian puts it, \"Children of the Day were first--and Love Song was about ten minutes behind.\" The thought that Christian music could sound like popular \"secular\" music was a radical innovation that would ultimately launch a revolution in liturgics unparalleled by anything since Reformers introduced congregational singing in the sixteenth century. But Children of the Day did not seem to know (or care) that they were innovators. They don't appear to have studied the works or thought of Ralph Carmichael or others who had tried for years to accomplish what they did in weeks. There was no intention or design. They weren't assembled by any record company or culled from the ranks of a Gospel choir. They were just four kids (almost literally) who had been revived by personal encounters with Jesus and who, like Peter in Acts, could not \"keep from speaking of what (they) had seen and heard\" (4:20). Then as you might expect from their Megadeth influences, the music switches to eighties thrash and metal. Some of the lyrics are a bit clunky, but when you are not writing in your native language this will always be a challenge. So it took me some time before I realised that \"Schmertzgarten\" is about the Jewish holocaust. The rock ballad \"Never Alone\" has additional female vocals from Mariangela Scafati. Then they do a cover version of \"In My Darkest Hour\" by Megadeth. The album closes with doomy Black Sabbath-esque riffing.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\u003cp\u003eAs Egi says \"We recorded \"The World Hates Me\" just for personal gratification and without any clue that one day it would be released by not one, but two labels (first edition with Quam Libet Records and the re-issue with Retroactive). Personally I was trying to catch in music what was happening in my new life, after having turn to Christian Faith. Jump For Joy was the first lyric I wrote, and it describes the incredible changes that meeting the Truth in person can bring to our lives. In particular, the verses: \"Rebellion grew for all these years\/ feedin' my own imprisonment\/ Today I fall down in tears\/ 'cause this slavery came to its end\". Apart from this song, and three others that we previously recorded in a demo in 2003 (these are W:P:D, For What It's Worth and Deliver You Back To Hell), most of the lyrics were written directly in the recording studio, right during the mix, prior to record vocals\".\u003c\/p\u003e\r\u003cp\u003eThere are eighties metal, speed metal, melodic rock ballads and thrash tracks all on here. Brian had an amazing ability to use tapping techniques, (pioneered by Eddie Van Halen), in incendiary ways that had never been heard before in Christian rock. Gary Mann's bass style was heavily influenced by bassists Geddy Lee of Rush and Dave Hope of Kansas. Gary drove the band from beneath, his playing coupling beautifully with the powerhouse drumming of Kris Klingensmith. Kris emerged as a talented lyricist, writing the words to nearly all of the band's songs on the last three albums as well as the notable words on the back cover of the Little Foxes album. A lyrically harsh and distinct album, Little Foxes also contains some of Belew's most notorious guitar work, along with NancyJo Mann?s most convicting vocals (her performances on ?China White? and ?Destroy After Use? are soul haunting!).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLittle Foxes marks the next step of Barnabas moving beyond the experimental and progressive sounds of Approaching Light Speed and Feel the Fire to embrace an all-out metal assault. ?Auschwitz 87? is so fast and aggressive that the guitar riffs could have come from a Metallica or early Slayer album. ?Destroy After Use? hammers away with monster metal riffs and terrifying passionate vocals that let you know in no uncertain terms: - ?the devil has a line on you.? Gone are most of the complex progressive pieces with keyboards that gave the listener moments to breathe on previous albums.
