Their unconventional sound relies on electronics, drums, bass, and vocals. The clash between industrial, beat-driven, and metallic elements offers a swirling, dark, emotive sound, alternately harsh and haunting as evidenced by their acclaimed debut album, 2017's The Storm Before the Calm on Solid State.
The project was envisioned by ex-Becoming the Archetype and Solamors bassist/vocalist Jason Wisdom in 2015. He imagined a sound separate from anything he'd done previously, one that would buoy a lyric critique of societal, spiritual, and psychological norms and offer a more direct atmospheric line to powerful emotional states. He began writing and recording original music for the project, and issued an extremely limited four-track demo in 2016 that sold out immediately. After securing a deal with Solid State -- also home to Becoming the Archetype -- Wisdom recruited keyboardist Brian Wages and drummer Josh Seagraves to complete the full-length The Storm Before the Calm. Released in February 2017, the sans-guitar release revealed a nearly obsessive affinity for experimentation and confrontation and garnered universally positive reviews inside and outside Christian music circles.

Wages and Seagraves were both eventually replaced by drummer Blake Aldrige (they were never meant to join permanently), and the two-man outfit developed a live show as -- if not more -- intense than their recorded music. This third incarnation of Death Therapy shifted gears again to experiment with a wider swath of noise, ambient, and gothic textures for 2019's Voices. In addition to a song sequence where no two tracks even resembled one another, the set also featured guest vocal spots from Glasslands' Josh Kincheloe, Silent Planet's Garrett Russell, and Matt Baird of Spoken.

TracklistShow Credits
1 Until Then
2 Self Mind Dead
3 The Lie
4 Wake Me (When I'm Dead)
5 Prodigal
6 Slow Dance (With Death)
7 Possessed
8 Everything Burns
9 The Belmont Family Curse (Pt. 1: Night)
10 The Belmont Family Curse (Pt. 2: Day)

Remastered and Reloaded

For Fans of Whiteheart, Giant and Journey

6 Panel fold in Jewel Case

Includes Lyrics

Enhanced Cover, Photos and More

JAG - THE ONLY WORLD IN TOWN

THE ONLY WORLD IN TOWN (1991) JAG’s second album was “arena rock” all the way. Even more importantly, the songs on this album have some significance. First, Billy, while touring Australia with WHITEHEART, heard the hit song, "Hands up in the Air'' from the band BOOM CRASH OPERA and worked with JAG to record it as the first song on the album. The song, 'Two Worlds Collide", was going to be cut and recorded by the band GIANT. Since GIANT already had 14-15 songs for their album, John talked Billy into making it a JAG song. Dann Huff played all the guitars, and it became the 4th song on the album. The idea for the song The Only World In Town came from John's eight-year-old daughter. "We were driving along and I was talking about the monopolizing phone company, saying 'they were the only game in town'. Then my daughter, who was in the back of the car, pipes up. 'Hey papa, this is the only world in town.' The song looks at the way we are destroying this world of ours and speaks about the 'source' of all the world's problems, about how, until we get our hearts changed, the world won't change."

Lead Vocals: John Garies (Jag)
Lead Guitar: Paul Brittain
Drums: Chuck Connor
Bass: Michael Lusk (Lorretta Lynn's Bass Player)

Hands Up In The Air

40 Watt City

What God’s Love Means

Two Worlds Collide

The Only World In Town

Sense of Wonder

Mastermind

Somebody’s Watching You

The Last Time I Looked

Written In Stone

If you like Whiteheart, Idle Cure, The Brave, Journey and Foreigner, you'll want to keep reading...

JAG is similar to bands like Liason, Whiteheart, Nouveaux, The Brave, Idle Cure and Fighter. Such is the case with metal icons Bloodgood, who were born from the seeds planted by drummer JT Taylor. In April 1980 in Seattle, Washington, JT meets bassist Greg Reed and guitarist David Zaffiro, who brings on board guitarist Rob Cochran, and after a jam session, The Crystal City Rockers, named after the New Jerusalem in the book of Revelation, are born. Finding their musical voice from endless jamming trying to yield original songs in the vein of REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Pink Floyd, and later in a more New Wave sound ala the Cars and the Police, The Crystal City Rockers start to gel as a band. But when Greg leaves the band and takes his PA System they were using, JT must go back to the drawing board to find not only Greg’s replacement, but also a need to purchase a PA System. Enter Craig Finley, a musician JT knew through his time spent playing in The Robert Case Band. Sharing lead vocals between JT, David, and Rob, The Crystal City Rockers become the House band at Seattle’s Calvary Fellowship playing with legacy artists such as Petra, Daniel Amos, Randy Stonehill, Servant, Jerusalem, Darrell Mansfield, and many more!

Through the local Christian music concert circuit, JT meets bassist Michael Bloodgood, who played in a band named Cypress, and the two hit it off sharing their love of the music of The Beatles. Soon a demo cassette tape, with the aid of Robert Case, is recorded in 1982 and sold at concerts, but no record deal came and JT decided to leave the band to join a musical production company in Florida. David, Rob, and Craig find another drummer and continue to play concerts locally. When JT returns in 1984, he hangs out with Michael Bloodgood, who tells JT he’s starting a metal band. Soon JT and Michael enlist David Zaffiro and after jamming, they agree all the pieces gelled together well. All that was needed was a lead vocalist. Through an ad placed in the paper, an amazing vocalist singing in night clubs, Les Carlsen, is found. Les makes it clear, that if he’s singing in the band, then the band must play for Jesus! To its credit, the latest release does fare a bit better, given that its longer run time allows the more subtle slower pieces to stretch out a bit more and truly sink in. And, to their credit, faster numbers like "The Overview" and "Let It Die" are as melodically beautiful and gripping as anything the band has ever produced. The trouble, though, is that there aren't enough cuts like these to vault Experience anywhere near the lofty heights achieved by the band's still-superior earliest efforts. Long-time fans would still do well to investigate the album given that the group's compositions do tend to get somewhat better with age. For everyone else, though, the best approach, ironically enough, would be to string the current record's five or six best tracks together into an EP's worth of truly engaging material.

Musically, the album is breathtaking. It soars in unexpected places and is just subtle enough in others. It’s constantly interesting and keeps everyone guessing. The opener, “Kaleidoscope”, is stunning with its use of strings. The creative direction they took with the composition of the album is what makes me enjoy it so much. It’s what I imagine outer space sounds like. This is why it’s self-titled. Mae’s ability to take a sonic concept and fulfill it to its highest capacity is something to behold.

I wish they had done the same with the lyrics. Whether it’s just weak lyrically or it’s personal, is up to each listener. The comments on YouTube are equally convincing for either side. It’s not quite what I’ve been used to from Mae, either from The Everglow or the other tracks I’ve heard throughout the years. There are tracks that I don’t feel this way about, like “5 Light Years”, which obviously plays to the space theme I mentioned before, or “Let It Die”, which sounds like the old Mae. “The Overview”, however, is a strange sort of spoken word that totally brings us back down and, for me at least, slows it down.

I’d have to say that “Simple Words” is probably my favorite track here, when it comes to the less experimental side of things. It sounds like an Everglow B-side, and I know that’s probably not a great reason to name a track your favorite, but that’s really my only reason. I’ve always loved the way Mae deals with the topic of young love and this is a wonderful embodiment of that.

This was a difficult album to write about because of how disjointed it seems to be. On one hand, we have what’s probably the finest example of what Mae is capable of as musicians and producers. On the other hand, their songwriting is rusty. My reasoning is that they figured that staying close to home lyrically while letting the music transport us would be the best bet to keep the album somewhat grounded. But it doesn’t really work, because we all know Mae is better than that. They’ve never been ones to shy away from loftier goals than what they’ve achieved in past releases. What I love so much about their old stuff is the whimsy they poured into each aspect, and that amount of effort isn’t quite present enough on what should be their defining album.

Tracks

Kaleidoscope (5:04)

Sing (3:37)

The Overview (3:03)

5 Light Years (4:18)

No Promises (10001001001100) (4:51)

You Fall When You Hesitate (6:08)

Our Love is a Painted Picture (6:04)

A Race for Our Autonomy (6:06)

Let It Die (4:36)

Simple Words (4:12)

Flow (feat. So Marsh often employs a lot of high sighs and cooing melodies and that’s exactly how lead track “Pope” from its first strains starts out. While not as pronounced through the rest of the album it still made me groan a little and pushed my feeling of wanting something different so every time I heard those sighs and that whispered singing relief it started to irritate me. But that wasn’t a breaker for me. Two other elements popped up (enough) to make me mark this as my least favorite Copeland release: 1) an almost unrelenting slow pace/ tempo (for our ear’s sake please mix in some more mid-tempo songs!—some will point out that “Colorless” cranks up some toward the end of the song but at track 7 of the album it comes in a little late) that is sometimes agonizingly accentuated by a lot of very subdued musical elements and (2) programming elements that have a weird stop/ start quality; it’s as if at times the music is taking you somewhere to suddenly break off and track back a few seconds and repeat and go on and, as you can then imagine, that added to the feeling of drag over an already slow tempo. Several songs have an almost lounge quality to them and “Night Figures” even features some finger snaps. I’m all for placing inventive sounds, or in the case of the finger snaps not often heard sounds, into the music and Marsh and co. certainly give us a variety of sound but those snaps stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. Meanwhile Marsh’s main lyrical tendency of focusing on romantic moments or memories or lost romance also begs for something new from his talent.

Tracks

Packaging
All new items are shipped brand-new and unopened in original packaging and come without damage or cracks. Perhaps it's the emotionally vulnerable lyrics and beautiful melodies. Perhaps it's Aaron Marsh's singularly sensitive falsetto and the band's intimate live shows. Whatever the reason, Copeland is beloved by thousands, myself included. Without straying into personal anecdote, it is fair to say that Copeland has impacted my own life in ways that only a handful of other bands (including contemporaries Mae and Anberlin) have done. So it was no surprise that I and many others were devastated when the band announced their breakup some five years ago. And it was no surprise that the band's announcement of a new album (ironically timed for April Fool's Day last year) generated such an outpouring of happiness and expectation. And at the end of October last year, Copeland finally delivered Ixora: an album that can only be said to have far exceeded all reasonable hopes.

It's difficult to know where to start in describing an album as exceptional as Ixora. Perhaps the most logical place to begin is with praise for Copeland's continued evolution from a songwriting perspective-- where a band that once played straightforward guitar-centered emo rock now allows a variety of instruments to take center stage, from acoustic guitar to piano to synths to strings. Even more impressive, the melodies are no longer merely "sweet," but occasionally venture into grittiness and even a slightly industrial sound, most notably on "Lavender." Ixora is an astonishingly effective mix of all the sounds Copeland have used in their past albums. It doesn't focus heavily on bombastic emo ballads, like Beneath Medicine Tree and In Motion did, but they're still there. But it also doesn't linger in the contemplative and musically minimalist, like You Are My Sunshine did. Instead, it takes those sounds and plays with them, like in the latter half of "Erase," where Aaron Marsh goes from an ineffably gentle bridge into a resounding crescendo with the band uniting around his falsetto in a wall of sound. "Chiromancer" expands in a similar way: at the beginning it sounds like it would be right at home on the low-key You Are My Sunshine, but it doesn't stay there. Instead, Marsh drops out of his gentle falsetto and into a strong crescendo, backed by a strongly compelling guitar line and a call-and-response melody.

Lyrically, Marsh is at the top of his game in writing heartfelt, vulnerable sentiments about love and its struggles. The influence of being a husband and a father is clear in his lyrics, most notably in the lovely simplicity of "Ordinary," where he rejoices in the familiar, everyday rhythm of love between two married people. "In Her Arms You Will Never Starve" also packs a strong emotional punch, and has come close to bringing tears to my own eyes on many listens. In it, Marsh ponders the comfort of being genuinely loved by a wife, saying "In her arms you will never starve, you will never freeze, and when the world is hard you can fall asleep there. In a world of chaos she can be your silence. The oceans of her kindness, they will pull you under." It's hard to think of another performer who could get away with such naked romanticism, but Marsh not only gets away with it, he revels in it and pulls the listener in too.

And to top it all off, Ixora is a masterful display of production. In this venture, as with the melodies and lyrics, Aaron Marsh is again the hero. He brings all the experience he has gleaned producing for other artists and assembles a richly layered sound that never settles or dulls. In some cases, the genius of his approach is seen in small flashes, like in the brilliant synth line that punctuates moments in "I Can Make You Feel Young Again." Other times, an entire song serves as a showcase for Marsh's talent. The best example of this is "Disjointed," which opens with a simple synth line, then layers on top a ringing vibraphone for a few bars, followed by a driving piano melody to top it off. Then, later in the track even more levels of sound are added, including a strong orchestral layer of strings. The effect is one of continually-shifting complexity that follows in perfect step with the changing rhythm and melody of the piece.

It hardly seems right to pen a well-rounded album review without mentioning at least one negative point, but finding drawbacks in Ixora is hard. Some listeners may be thrown off by the previously mentioned shift of tone in "Lavender," but I personally found it quite effective. "I Can Make You Feel Young Again" is perhaps a little too plodding, but to criticize it is dangerously close to nit-picking. There simply are no significant missteps on this album and there isn't a single track I would ever be tempted to skip.

Simply put: Ixora is a masterpiece of songwriting, performance and production.
