The Genesis of a Legend

Before they became household names in the Christian rock scene, the members of Idle Cure were cutting their teeth in the Southern California club circuit. The band’s roots trace back to 1979 and the group Sojourn, which featured Mark Ambrose (guitar) and Steve Shannon (vocals).

The pre-history of the band is a fascinating web of talent:

• The Eden Connection: After Sojourn dissolved, Ambrose and Shannon joined forces with guitarist Chuck King (who later found success with the band Shout) to form Eden.

• A Moment of History: In 1983, Eden recorded a single track, "Break Out of the Night," for the Back to the Rock #2 compilation. Written by Roger Charles, it was the only song the band ever recorded—and it serves as the essential missing link to the Idle Cure sound.

• The Big Break: It was during these early studio sessions at John Elefante’s studio that Ambrose famously led Elefante to the Lord. With the chemistry established and the songwriting prowess of the group solidified, Idle Cure was born.

The 1986 Breakthrough

When their self-titled debut dropped on the newly formed Frontline Records in 1986, the response was immediate. With a style comparable to Def Leppard, Journey, and Foreigner, Idle Cure brought stadium-sized production to the faith-based market.

The single "Breakaway" became a runaway hit on Christian rock radio, setting a new standard for the genre. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, the band continued to evolve, dominating airwaves with the stadium anthem "Pray" from their 1990 album 2nd Avenue and pushing their heavier, guitar-driven limits on their final 1994 release, Eclipse.
