Product Description

Few albums capture a moment of musical and personal transformation as powerfully as Seeds of Change. Originally released in 1980, while Kerry Livgren was still a central creative force in Kansas, this remarkable debut solo album brought together an extraordinary collection of musicians to explore seven ambitious compositions that blended progressive rock, hard rock, melodic sophistication, and deeply searching lyrical themes. Rather than simply recording another Kansas album under his own name, Livgren approached Seeds of Change as an opportunity to expand his musical vocabulary, selecting musicians and vocalists whose individual talents could bring each composition to life. Recorded during February and March 1980 at Axis Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and produced by Livgren alongside Brad Aaron, the album became a fascinating intersection of musical worlds. Ronnie James Dio delivered two unforgettable vocal performances on the dramatic “Mask of the Great Deceiver” and the majestic “To Live for the King,” demonstrating the remarkable versatility of one of hard rock's greatest singers. Kansas vocalist Steve Walsh brought his unmistakable power to “How Can You Live,” Jeff Pollard opened the album with “Just One Way,” Mylon LeFevre contributed to the rootsier “Whiskey Seed,” and Davy Moire appeared on “Down to the Core.” David Pack of Ambrosia supplied the soaring lead vocal on the epic closing composition, “Ground Zero,” which also features the distinctive violin of Kansas bandmate Robby Steinhardt.

Musically, Seeds of Change is an album of extraordinary contrasts. “Just One Way” introduces the record with energetic melodic rock and a confident sense of purpose. “Mask of the Great Deceiver” moves into darker, more theatrical progressive territory, with Dio's commanding performance giving the song an almost apocalyptic intensity. “How Can You Live” brings a powerful Kansas-like blend of melodic urgency and intricate musicianship, while “Whiskey Seed” explores a more earthy, blues-influenced sound. “To Live for the King” is among the album's defining statements, combining majestic musical arrangements with a dramatic vocal performance that remains one of Dio's most distinctive guest appearances. “Down to the Core” introduces a different rhythmic and tonal character, showcasing Livgren's ability to move between progressive rock, melodic rock, and more groove-oriented arrangements. Finally, “Ground Zero” delivers an expansive conclusion, with David Pack's expressive vocals, layered keyboards, shifting dynamics, and Robby Steinhardt's violin bringing the album to an unforgettable finish. More than four decades after its original release, Seeds of Change remains an essential recording for fans of Kansas, classic progressive rock, and the remarkable musicians who helped create it. This officially licensed Girder Records CD reissue presents the original seven-song album in a jewel case with a 12-page full-color booklet featuring extensive historical essays and liner notes by Greg Hays.
