Produced by Terry Scott Taylor, Against the Grain released in 1987 on Frontline records. It was a pivotal moment for the Altar Boys as they moved a bit away from the The Clash/77s raw garage punk of When Your A Rebel and Gut Level Music and refined their sound in a polished melodic hard-rock/punk hybrid with heavier production which reached a much broader audience and captured the attention of nearly everyone.  It's been herald as their most commercially accessible record.  This albums saw these punk rock kids all grown up and maturing, lyrically and musically, capturing the Altar Boys at their peak. It didn't leave their punk/garage rock behind it just built on their previous successes and left us with our fist-in-the-air type of defiance with songs like Hearts Lost in Nowhere,  Against the Grain and Shout Louder.  But it also gave us what many CCM historians call their stand-out track, Broken, which became one of the most requested singles on the 1987 Christian rock circuit, praised for its emotional depth and melody.
