Product Description

One of the most extraordinary progressive rock collaborations of 1980 returns to vinyl. Kerry Livgren's Seeds of Change stands as a remarkable chapter in the history of classic rock, bringing together the musical imagination of Kansas' legendary guitarist and songwriter with an astonishing lineup of guest performers. Originally released in 1980, Seeds of Change was recorded at Axis Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, during February and March of that year, with Livgren and Brad Aaron serving as producers. Livgren assembled a cast of musicians from across the rock landscape, including Ronnie James Dio, Steve Walsh, David Pack, Jeff Pollard, Mylon LeFevre, Davy Moire, Phil Ehart, Robby Steinhardt, Barriemore Barlow, Paul Goddard, and Bobby Campo. Each contributed to an album that refuses to be confined to one musical category. Progressive rock complexity, arena-rock power, melodic sophistication, blues-influenced arrangements, and deeply reflective songwriting coexist throughout its seven compositions. Dio's appearances are particularly noteworthy: his dramatic performance on “Mask of the Great Deceiver” gives the composition a dark theatrical intensity, while “To Live for the King” reveals another dimension of his commanding voice against Livgren's expansive musical backdrop.

The original vinyl sequence tells its own compelling story. Side A opens with Jeff Pollard's energetic vocal on “Just One Way,” moves into the ominous progressive drama of “Mask of the Great Deceiver,” builds through Steve Walsh's commanding performance on “How Can You Live,” and closes with the earthy, blues-inflected “Whiskey Seed.” Side B begins with the majestic “To Live for the King,” shifts into the rhythmic sophistication of “Down to the Core,” and concludes with the expansive “Ground Zero,” featuring David Pack on lead vocals and Robby Steinhardt on violin. These seven songs document Livgren's creative evolution during a pivotal period in his life, as he explored questions of identity, truth, belief, and spiritual direction without abandoning the ambitious musical arrangements that had helped establish Kansas as one of America's most celebrated progressive rock bands. For collectors, the album represents a remarkable convergence of musicians whose combined work stretches across Kansas, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, Ambrosia, Jethro Tull, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and LeRoux. This officially licensed Girder Records vinyl reissue restores Seeds of Change to the LP format and includes a substantial 12-page full-color booklet featuring extensive historical essays and liner notes by Greg Hays, offering a deeper appreciation of the music, the musicians, and the story behind this landmark album.
