DeGarmo & Key's D&K (1987) might not quite reflect some of the gritty blues driven sensibilities of its first two albums but it lacks in blues it gains in rock and I mean hard rock, creating a work characterized by catchy choruses and notable melodies (the songwriting here is fantastic), polished (but not too polished) production and the strong musicianship that Eddie and Dana bring to the table. If you are looking for DeGarmo & Key to “rock out” then give “Out Of The Danger Zone” (a real barn burner), “War With The World” (by far the albums heaviest) and “Radical” (catchy disposition) several listens.  Some of the previously referenced progressiveness can be found in “Rock Solid” (heavier rock direction) and “Strength Of Love” (more melodic feel), two of the finest songs in the groups three decade repertoire.

Produced by DeGarmo & Key and John Hampton for Mint Productions

Dana Key: Lead vocals and guitars
Eddie DeGarmo: Keyboards and 2nd lead vocal on "Rock Solid"

Dear Friends: More than anything in the world, we pray that the words and music on this album will draw you closer to our Lord. For this reason, we have included Bible verse references and study questions to help the truths in these songs to become realities in your life. We challenge you to find a readable Bible (we suggest the NIV Student Bible) and to take time to study these verses and the contexts in which they are found. The greatest thing that can ever happen to you is to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. We challenge you to do so now! If you are not sure where you stand with the Lord, we would like to lead you in this simple prayer:
JESUS, I ADMIT THAT I HAVE DISOBEYED YOUR COMMANDS AND HAVE CHOSEN TIME AFTER TIME TO IGNORE YOUR WILL FOR MY LIFE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THOUGH THE PENALTY FOR SIN IS ETERNAL DEATH, YOU CHOSE TO DIE IN MY PLACE IN ORDER TO OFFER ME ETERNAL LIFE. RIGHT NOW I CONFESS THAT YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD, AND THAT YOU ROSE FROM THE DEAD. I CHOOSE TO TURN AWAY FROM MY SIN AND TRUST YOU WITH MY WHOLE LIFE. I ASK THAT YOU WILL CHANGE MY HEART AND HELP ME LIVE A LIFE THAT IS PLEASING TO YOU. IN YOUR NAME I PRAY, AMEN.

One of the greatest lies that you can believe is that suicide is the final solution to the anguish and pain you may be experiencing. The bitter tragedy is that suicide destroys ONLY the body. Without Christ, a conscious soul will be thrust into an eternity without mercy, hope, love...or God. Though it may seem that no one—including God— cares, nothing could be further from the truth! The truth is that God loves you and me so much that He sent His own Son to die for our sins so that we would not have to pay this penalty ourselves!
When feelings of total hopelessness and pain overwhelm you, take comfort in the fact that everyone feels this way on occasion (check out Psalms 13, 69 & 102). Second, do what the writer of Psalms did when he felt that way: cry out to God, admit your desperation, and accept the love He offers. Third, find a responsible, mature Christian with whom to share your feelings. A burden shared is only half as heavy. Finally, realize that your only hope can be found in Jesus, who knew you even before you were born, and died and rose again to bring you life in all its fullness (Jn 10:10).
If you know of someone who is considering attempting suicide, the first thing you need to do is to share this information with a trusted parent, school counselor, adult church staff person, or professional Christian counselor. It is unfair of your friend to lay so great a burden on your shoulders alone, and the guilt and remorse that could result will be more than you can bear.
The Lord offers you real answers to the questions you are asking. Lamentations 3:19-26 records the feelings of someone who has lost all hope... and then found it in the Lord. Read it, then: Give Jesus time to change your life.

Girder is the lost member of D&K.

I'm loving these Legends of Rock releases from Girder for Degarmo and Key's albums. They are all must haves for fans of 80s music.

Rhythm Section Steals the Show!

This new remastered release from Girder is a great addition to my music collection. This is one of Degarmo and Key's fast, guitar-driven albums (in my opinion, this is when they are at their best), along with Streetlight. The guitars are there, the keyboards are there, the vocals are there, but what struck me in listening to this CD remaster is the powerful rhythm section. The bass is driving and powerful throughout, and the drums add to the power in most of the songs, driving them forward. There's a frenetic energy to most of the album that makes it feel like this album was done fast (but definitely still a professional job!). The main exception to this fast-paced feeling is "Teenage Suicide", a sober, thoughtful song. I highly recommend adding this album to your collection if you like to rock out!
