Description

“Look, we just write pop songs that make us feel things,” laughs Dane Allen, trying to explain the motive behind his alternative/pop group, LOYALS. “We aren’t congealed with this big message. Obviously we can change our minds down the road, but that’s not who we are now.”

The band’s lack of pretension is as refreshing as it is uncommon, their self-assuredness a most likely side effect of the years they’ve spent playing together. “We met when we were teenagers,” explains Allen of fellow bandmates Andrew Gomez and Evan Thon. “We’ve stuck with each other ever since.” The decade long friendship not only earned them their moniker, but—through practice and experimentation—aided in the cultivation of a pop group that masters the genre.

Their upcoming record—brimming with buoyant melodies and standout hooks—is a playful demonstration of everything pop. The self-titled debut pays homage to their R&B and alternative rock influencers while maintaining an attitude all its own. “This record is a byproduct of our daily lives,” explains Allen. “It’s therapeutic to write what you feel in the moment, whether you’re sad, or you’re in love, or you just don’t care. We aren’t curated, we just write what we feel.”

Review

Okay, I've been a pretty big Tooth and Nail fan, so when I saw this band signed to the label, I had to check them out. It is very different from everything else on the label, but SO GOOD. I'm not a big listener to EDM or synth-pop or electronic music, I'm more of a pop-punk-rock guy, but this band does an insanely good job of writing catching tunes that move you. They have an obvious base of electronic elements, but there are a ton of tasty guitar licks and vulnerable vocal melodies. They incorporate so many musical elements in a highly polished format sophisticated for a debut album, from upbeat catchy hooks (Mind Up, Bail Out, Skyline) to somber, moody jams (IDC, Hold On) and real pop bangers (Never Too Far Gone, Heartstopper). Seriously, there is not a bad song on this album. Can't wait to catch them when they come to our area on tour with Mae. Buy this album now.
