Stories: The John Elefante Collection
It has been said that John Elefante could sing the phone book and people would listen. Very few voices in the history of rock carry the command, power, and soul that John’s voice possesses. It is no wonder the iconic group Kansas tapped him to lead the band during one of their most pivotal eras.
John has enjoyed a storied career, but Kansas was only the beginning. Alongside his brother Dino, John was the mastermind behind the Christian rock powerhouse Mastedon, releasing two seminal albums in 1989 and 1990 that set the industry into a frenzy. Together, the brothers built one of Nashville’s greatest recording landmarks, The Sound Kitchen, where they crafted hits for some of the biggest acts of our time.
Between his acclaimed solo albums—Windows of Heaven, Corridors, Defying Gravity, On My Way to the Sun, and The Amazing Grace—and his work as a producer, John’s influence is woven into the fabric of modern music. His production work with Allies, Sweet Comfort Band, and Barren Cross caught the ear of Petra’s Bob Hartman; when Back to the Street was released in 1986, the phrase "Produced by John and Dino Elefante" became the gold-standard indicator of production quality. With over 100 major-label albums produced (many on their own Pakaderm Records label) and guest appearances ranging from the St. Elmo’s Fire soundtrack to duets with Lou Gramm and Sandi Patty, John has earned 3 Grammys, 8 Dove Awards, and an Emmy.
